June 2020 Work Reports
« on: June 03, 2020, 05:52:13 AM »
Anticipated work for Saturday June 6 - yes, we're officially working again!

* Rock the Mountain - ballast trains on the Mountain.  Departure 8:30ish (depends on how many we have and when).
* Car barn - doors need hanging, walls need painting.
* #9 repairs.

Remember - wear your masks (we still have some available in the gift shop), and lunch is on your own.

But how does rules revision affect us out-of-state folks?  Do we still have the 14 day quarantine?

14 day quarrantine is still in effect, If you plan to come and stay.

As for ballast trains, Freds tractor is on the fritz, and we hope to have it fixed be then. I am in hopes it is nothing more than fuel filters. If not, then maybe the loader will go back together quickly and go back up to AC to load stone..

Work done on Saturday June 6:

* Ballast train: 4 loaded flatcars were unloaded on the Mountain this morning.  A party of about 7 showed up to help.  We ballasted around 250 feet, more or less.
* Fred's tractor: Mike was working to replace the fuel filters when I left on ballast duty.  I didn't hear the outcome.

Mike had his own project(s), I don't know what they were or their outcome, as in the afternoon the cold front came through with thunderstorm downpours, so I left.

Thank you, James and crew, I consider that a great success.  I hope we continue these ballasting sessions weekly- one round of four cars each Saturday morning for several weeks.  Honestly- 7-10 person crews working mornings only is a sustainable approach.  I like it, thanks all.

The tractor is not fixed yet. Might be the injector pump.

We had a few unfamiliar faces (to me anyway) and a few we mostly see on work weekends. It was great to have them. Four flatcars wouldn’t have been unloaded without them. I even pitched in I was so inspired.

Mr Prez, ya da man.  We are all inspired at the progress being made in spite of all this Corona stuff.

It was a pleasure to have the "youngsters" who are around my age or slightly younger up today. They all enjoyed themselves very much. Some of whom have never even been here before. As typical with the railroads unique charm if you will, they all left smiling and can't wait to come back.

What an enjoyable day. We toured the mountain, and got some native ticks as well.

What's a day on the Mountain without a souvenir tick or two? :o

I tried to continue work in the area of Maine Locomotive and machine. First, I tried to remove material from Phantom Crossing, only to discover either a piece of ledge or a rock the size of the Kubota. So, I routed the ditch around it a little deeper than before.. And cleaned the ditch as far south as I could, reaching from the top of the bank. I really needed the tip car. Next weekend maybe..

Then I headed south, removing a log and half dozen ties from the ditches, and storing them at ML&M.

Then I tried to lower the pipe in the driveway at ML&M. I wanted deeper, but stopped when I found erosion cloth. Cleaned it off and set the culvert on it. I dropped it about 4 inches.

First, I dug next to it, and removed most of the gravel from the top.

Then shoved it to the side, without crushing the pipe. It was at this point here, if you could see the sky, that you knew I was going to get wet..

So, I took shelter in my truck as the thunder passed by. After 20 minutes it had let up, so I put on my rain gear and started again. Well, I wish I would have seen the radar. Because after about 15 minutes it stopped raining and started pouring..

But I stayed after it, and by the time the sun came out, I was finished..and was able to see how well the lower culvert worked, draining north of the crossing. A definate improvement.

And, sometimes having a small machine comes in handy for getting around some obstacles.. I had been out on the bank above the switch to ML&M and cleaned up a couple piles and some debris.

Nice work Mike. I like how you scheduled the rain so you could immediately test your work....
