Blizzard of '13
« on: February 09, 2013, 07:16:09 AM »
Woke up this morning to high winds and driving snow.  There's around 2 feet of snow on the ground, but only a few inches on the roof of my garage because of the winds.

Below is a picture I took out my kitchen window at about 6:45 AM.  As you can see, visibility is about 2 tenths of a mile at best.

Guess I'm not going to be at the museum this morning. :( ???

Got the same thing James.  No snow on the garage roof but it's up to the windows.  It's deep on the porch, up to the doorknob of the storm door.  There's another 4-6 hours of heavy snow and high winds to go.  Some forecasters are calling the storm Snowpocalypse although it's name is supposed to be Nemo.  Something fishy about that.

Last night Cindy got photos of large foot prints in the back yard ... yeti??

I plowed my driveway twice this morning to no avail as the town road isn't plowed yet, however, at this minute we still have power!

Merrimack NH I have about three feet of snow in front of my car, some people have nothing around their cars and some cars are buried.

At 10 AM the visibility is about the same as it was at 6:15.

20 inches on my walkway.  Traffic on my road is about 2 vehicles an hour (its usually in the dozens).

It was just announced on the radio that Portland has received 29.3" of snow which breaks the old record set during the 1979 storm.  The USPS has advised that there will be no mail delivery today, good thing since my mailbox is burried.

For those of you on facebook, Cindy has posted a few photos taken this morning.  The views were shot when the wind let up enough so that you could see.  At times the snow and wind cause white-out conditions.

Stewart couldn't have been a Yeti there's no tracks leaving.

The trailer is a little buried. Excuse my thumb.

Thanx for the pics Brendan, wouldn't mind having the Yeti up here today.  Maybe the tracks in the backyard were made by the abominable snowman!

Still snowing hard here, 2-3" an hour.  The drive has been plowed out but you can't tell, got 2+ feet piled in front of the garage door again.  I slowly forced the storm door open (snow was up to the door knob) and cleaned off the porch.  The walk was shoveled but it's covered again. Wind is still gusting 40-50mph.

I think snow finally stopped right around 4:30 this afternoon.  It was just starting when I headed out for work yesterday at 6 AM.  34+ hours of snow!

I'm ready to get out of the house and do something.

Hey James,

You could come over to my house and shovel  ;D

Steve,

My ell door looked like your patio door.  My choices were to go out the slider into a 5 foot drift, climb out the dinette window into another drift or slowly push the door open.  I decided on the latter and s-l-o-w-l-y pushed it out enough to get my arm out with the shovel.  It took a while before there was enough room on the porch to step outside and work. I've cleaned twice since then but it's halfway filled back in ... Goody goody, ain't we got fun??!?

It's about time we had a good old fashioned Maine storm. This stuff is very powdery. It quit snowing here about noon. Snowblowing was fun because you never knew which way to aim. I wound up with 18 inches. It was fun trying to get out this morning to go to a fire. 3 attempts to get out through the snowbank.

The best laid plans...

I had been looking forward to this weekend, as I was free to visit Sheepscot. The only glitch was that I would be coming home from a business trip to Medford Oregon.

When I left Boston on Tuesday, the radio mentioned that there was a *chance* of *flurries* on Friday. Since I was flying in on Friday afternoon, I opted for a covered parking spot.

My *first* flight home was cancelled on Thursday. I rescheduled that for Saturday, as that was offered.

My *second* flight home was cancelled on Friday - now the earliest flight back was/is TUESDAY!

So, with an extra few days, I drove 8+ hours to visit the Sumpter Valley Railroad outside of Baker City, OR. Tomorrow (Sunday) I drive to Billings, MT., where my employer is based (an 11 hour drive from Baker City.) I'll put a full trip report on the Sumpter Valley in WW&F Visits. But, at least I got my railroad fix today, see photo.

Michelle and Emily report well over 2' of snow in Hampstead, NH. But they are safe, warm, and shoveled out (thanks to our friends and neighbors.)

Hi Ed,

Looking forward to seeing your SVRR photos.  That's a neat railroad that I plan to visit someday.

Just heard that Portland set a new snowfall record with 32".  It didn't stop snowing in Alna until after 5pm.  Hard to tell how much snow there is.  Some places have as little as a foot while other spots are drifted over 6 feet.  Wind is still howling at 8pm but it should die down overnight.

Hard to believe the Winter Work Weekend is next weekend.  Have a safe trip back,

Stewart
