Hi Folks,

I've posted a bunch of my shots of the Annual Picnic over on RailPictures.net.  These are the ones that obviously fit the "mold" for that site.  As I get time, I will probably put up a few more.  I shot about 300 frames that day.   The weather was great and the museum crew put on a very nice show indeed!

First run-by at Albee's Field: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=293314&nseq=7

Freight train approaching Alna Center:  http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=293497&nseq=5

Mixed train highballing through Alna Center: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=293679&nseq=2

Switching cars at Alna Center....really, really nice light!:  http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=293499&nseq=4

Engine crew performing the run-around:  http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=293821&nseq=1

Final run-by with the Ford stakebed truck:  http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=293328&nseq=6

Capping the stack in the shop:  http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=294258&nseq=0

Enjoy!

Great work, Kevin! I was wondering when we might see some of your shots from that day!

Hi Kevin,  Thanks for posting the links.  Beautiful photos.  I like the one of Joe capping #10.

It was nice to meet you at Alna Center, now I can put a face with the pictures.  I enjoyed helping set up the scenes with the train crew and your photos show the result of our efforts.

While not the main attraction, the 52 recieved a fresh coat of paint, thanks to Stewart Rhine.

Stephen, great shots as always.  You seem to be in the right place at the right time to catch a special shot like the one of #10 on the trestle from below.  Really nice picture and a really unique angle.

Right place at the right time, my butt! He tells us what he wants because that's who he is. We do what he wants because that's who we are. Everybody wins, as the photos prove. ;)
Don't ask me. I only cut the grass. Oops, I don't even do that anymore.

I should post a string of out-takes from ALL FOUR runbys at that location! Sometimes it takes a LOT of frames to get a keeper.

I was a brakeman the Sunday of the picnic and on the morning's photo freight. But of course I had my camera with me. I was not quite satisfied with what I shot on Saturday morning, as there is only a tiny shaft of sunlight falling directly on the midpoint of the bridge (which illuminates the nose of the engine if you can time it right). Steve knew I was bummed with Saturday's attempts, so when we stopped at Humason to drop off the photographers he said to me, "go ahead, you know you want to shoot it again!"  ;D
Not one to argue with the conductor, or the rapidly rising sun, (or the president for that matter!) I grabbed my camera and jumped off!

But in the end, after looking at the pictures on my computer screen, one of my frames from the very first runby on Saturday contained a pleasing image!!

Damn.

Well Stephen, your comment proves what I've always been told about good photographers: It usually takes many attempts (pictures) to get that one that you really want.  Regardless, those are still nice pictures.

Henri Cartier Bresson always said he shot only what he exhibited. Later, his assistant said he lied. Kodak would have been bankrupt years ago if only "good" pictures were snapped.
Wish I had had VR on my Canon FT-QL in 1974 when I rode a wide gage Amtrak engine form Jacksonville, FL to Waycross, GA. I couldn't believe how those things vibrated. I could barely stand up.  I felt like a football player in those old electric football games that had the plastic players vibrating all over the field.
What makes Mr. Hussar's photos really stand out are that he seems to put a fifth dimension - the past - into them. Great angles, great facial expressions and a sense of timelessness. These might have been taken in 1890 except that they are in color.
