Cold Morning at the Museum (Pictures)
« on: December 13, 2008, 06:47:14 PM »
Due to a recent Snow/Sleet/Freezing rain/rain storm, it was very icy at the museum this morning. This caused some headaches but also provides some great scenery.
After we had cleared the line of fallen trees, I scrambled to get my camera and went to Sutters and walked toward Davis Grade. The first two shots are of some ice covered birch trees that are leaning into the right of way.

Here is a very scenic Davis Grade

During the day some melting went on. This produced even more possibilities for photos.
The first is a section of rail that saw enough sun to get the ice to melt off the top.

The sun also warmed up the roof of Coach 8 and 103 and decorated the sides.

At this point, I thought I was all done. I turned around and for something that was in the sun most of the day, it sure did have a lot of ice on it. The new light by the Bay One door.

Great photos, Mike.
It was 60* here today and we used our propane torch to burn many piles of tumbleweeds at the Colorado Live Steamers site! Not a Maine problem.
Tomorrows high is to be 16* with snow all day.

Great photos Mike!  Thank for posting them.

Did the ice storm cause many problems in the mid-coast area?  I know the storm was severe in northern Mass., Vermont, New Hampshire and parts of Maine.

Thanks for posting the photos, Mike - hope all of you up there made it through the storm OK.  We talked with Sue's Mom in Harvard MA, still no power there at 10pm.
Ira, I always thought that Colorado weather was the craziest that I have ever experienced, including the Front Range area.

This morning there was many sections, some in Wiscasset, that were still waiting for electric power.

At our house in Harvard, MA, the trees really took a beating, with many big and small branches cracking and falling all Thursday night into Friday morning. Current prediction of getting power back is Tuesday night, and there are crews everywhere.
Our house didn't get any damage, but my wife's car got a tree top into it and will need some work..

As you can see, if I'd parked it 6 feet farther back it would have been OK, but that top came from a tree at least 15 feet away. Oh well..
We live in a pine grove, so a lot of the smaller trees got topped, and the bigger ones lost many small branches. The ice made things especially fun...

It was pretty during the daylight, but it gets awfully dark and cold at night in December.

Fortunately we have friends with a big house in Concord, so we're hanging out there for now.

Oh, and I now feel like a real WW&F volunteer: I have a shiny, new, Stihl 16" chainsaw! Vrrroom, Vrrrrooom!!  :D

After 60* on Saturday afternoon, a new record cold was set the next day(Sunday) MINUS 19*F. Only a 79* difference and only in Colorado. Yes, my truck started first try this a.m. and no plug-in.

I was hoping you had something with a little more power Gordon. That bucksaw might take a while to tackle the top of that pine.

Josh, only 5 or 6. Nothing bigger than 6 inches across and mostly Fir. All from Albees crossing North. We did get one maple top that was diced up to 4 foot (or so) and transported to Sheepscot for starter fuel for #10.
