Rails for the extension were set prior to the concrete floor pour. There are tracks extending to the building end for each of the three tracks. When the costruction is complete, the tracks will be connected to the existing car shop tracks. Look at the previous posts for rail photos.
Painting will occur when the weather permits, probably May or June, in my opinion.

May or June would be better. Right now, I think the paint would freeze before it dried. Hopefully things work out and I can get an interior shot before the space gets occupied. Right now with the doors and lumber inside, it looks kind of cluttered. If I think of it, I will take some pictures of the upstairs. That was organized last weekend and looks rather nice. But I'm sure we can fill that too.

I know this suggestion is a little late in coming, but as I was standing in the new area, with the cold but bright sun streaming in the south-facing doorways, I thought that it sure would be nice to have a couple of windows in those doors. They wouldn't have to be fancy, and would provide light inside especially in the winter time. The new extension is a really nice, large, unobstructed space which should be a pleasure to work in. Natural light was a common feature of many factories and workshops in the 19th and early 20th century. The door windows can be added later on when the weather is better, but it might be easier to plan for them now while the doors are being rebuilt.

Actually, the way the doors were designed, it would involve cutting a cross brace to install a window. Still is possible, it just may weaken the doors. In the Bay 2 door, there is a small window. It will let in some light, but not much.

The original Wiscasset car shop had a window in the center door, which was added around 1918.  It allowed light into the center stall's dark interior.  Following that example I installed the window in the West (fake) bay 2 door to get more light in where the Prentice lathe is.   It was the only window in the previous bay 2-3 space and made a difference when all the doors were closed.  We can add a small window to the bay 1 and 3 doors but it would compromise the doors strength as Mike mentioned.  That final decision is up to Zack.  It would be nice but I have found that windows in large doors get broken more often than windows in fixed walls.  We should probably wait to see how well the 6 side windows and 1 front window light the area before installing any more.  I know Josh R. has an electric lighting plan that will cover the area well.

BTW - it looks like the overhang is enclosed, is that correct?  It sure looks good.

Vincent, the "mold" on the left door is snow that froze to the door while it lay in the snowbank. Today was a warm day so the snow should be gone.

Also, late last Saturday afternoon two new windows were unloaded from a pickup truck and put in storage. At some point they will be installed on the second floor.

Mike ,   I for one would just leave the doors as they are now.  The building is closer to the road and security is of a concern with less glass,  less likely to have vandalism.   Fred L. Kuhns

Stewart, you are correct. All overhang on the new portion is enclosed.

The doors (real and false) were all installed today and the track car wheels were "sweated" on (all except for a half). I believe Steve or Mike will be posting photos soon.

The other doors were installed today. And after everyone left, Zack took off the plywood covering the window. Just needs some trim and the two windows upstairs.

Zack plans to have a crew working on the shop extension during the track weekend in April.  The group will work on whatever has not gotten done by then.  This includes installing trim, battens and painting the exterior if the weather permits.  There is also a plan to extend the new pine sheathing along the entire East wall of the shop.  The project will require removing the old T-111 wood panels and high level windows.  The old window locations will be boarded over and new window framing built into the purlins.  Four new windows, matching the ones in the addition will be installed in the old wall.  When the windows and new sheathing are in place, the entire East side of the shop will match - giving the building a more historic appearance.  This is the wall seen by visitors as they stand on the platform waiting for the train.

Stewart, I should be there to help you with the sheathing.

Stewart,
When I heard of the idea you had from Zack, I thought it was great. I looked it over after he told me to see what it would entail. Built roughly the same as the extension, so not much modification needed there. But I do have some questions. Do you think or plan to leave the side door where it is, now in the middle of the wall? And how many windows do you plan on? If I remember correctly, the spacing of the timbers were a little different than Zacks but I figured the windows could be centered somehow to keep them from being in the center of a beam.
