November 2009 Work Planning
« on: November 03, 2009, 06:09:02 PM »
Anticipated work for Nov 7, 2009:

Albion Work Day: Saturday is Albion Day 2009.  I'm sure Carl will be serving Mooseburgers at 1 whether you want them then or not  ;D

Percival House: the cellar clean-out is well underway and one more day will probably do it.

I don't know if there are plans for things in the car shop.

I spoke with Carl tonight. He should have enough ties, joint bars, bolts and spikes for us. There will also be 500 feet of ceiling boards delivered tomorrow so those with carpentry skills are especially welcome. He'll have a compressor for the nail gun. He promised that James can eat at 1:00 like he always asks to.:D

It was still there on the Monday of the Fall Work Weekend.  My wife and I drove up there to see Albion on the Northern Division.  Some sort of "critter" parked in front of the depot building.

Work done on Nov 7

Albion: A crew of 6 or 7 were at Albion.  They got the siding rebuilt, among other things.  See the thread in the other topic.

Percival Basement: The pile of stone that was outside the basement is now inside the basement, all spread around.  We'll need a little more stone, to finish the job.  Sounds like Zack wants to compact the stone some, then put in more stone.

Brookville: Dismantling of the Brookville has continued, all wheels were off the engine and the journals were off the axles.  Jonathan says the wheels and axles all look very good.

#9: Jonathan and Jason were busy on the big casting, making little chips off the old block.  Zack was busy on the sand dome, and got that on.

Anticipated work for weekend of November 14.

Ties: I'm planning to replace ties on the mainline starting at 7 or so and ending either 10 or 11, if any passengers show up for the first train.  Where we have only the diesel engine now for motive power (other than 0-2-0 power) it's needed for passengers too.

Loco 9: While the big #9 work weekend is next weekend, I'm sure there's still things to do that need bodies to help with the work.

There's probably other stuff that can happen that I'm not thinking about, such as tree or grass cutting, etc.

Work done on November 14:

- Rick and Gordon worked on removing the burned-off bolts from #9's saddle casting.  The bolts attached the smokebox to the frame.  They removed the outer bolts,  and started on the inner bolts.

- Bill worked downstairs in the house and built a hanging frame for the cold water tank.

- John R cleaned up all the dead flies in the Alna Center station (the floor was carpeted with them)

- The mid-week crew working on the Brookville removed more pieces.

- I never got out to replace ties.

Anticipated work for November 21:

- Loco 9: Jason has scheduled the 21st as a Loco 9 work day.  Work will primarily be on prepping the smokebox for joining with the boiler.  There may also be prep work on the saddle casting to receive the smokebox.  Plus there's machine work to do as well.

- Weed whacking: If there's more people than work for #9, Fred will take people out for removing the tall grass from the remaining bit of ROW.

- There may be small projects going on in the house, or in the yard.  And of course there's trains to run if anyone shows up.

Work done on November 21:

- Loco 9: The smokebox was brought into the car shop and moved to be near the boiler, then work started on it.  Also there was work in the machine shop on the big casting.

- Snowplow: The snowplow got a partial paint job, on the back side of it.

- Loco 51: The rear drive gear was removed during the week, and was sitting on a bench in the machine shop.  The gear was opened up and cleaned up.  There's not much wear to it.

- Bandsaw: Vern has been working on the bandsaw, the big casting that for many years sat toward the north side of Bay 1.  It's been painted and some parts have been found for it and those have been painted.

The grass/brush cutting was finished along the ROW that has track. There is still brush cutting that needs to be done. 1, At Sheepscot between Percival House and section house. 2. ROW south of Cross Rd. 3, ROW north of Rt 118 to Headtide and maybe 4. brush in Albee's field beside the ROW.

Anticipated work for the weekend of November 28:

Thursday Nov 26: Thanksgiving day.  Everyone's assignment is to stuff themselves with turkey or tofu (depending if you're a vegetarian or not), give thanks for the restoration efforts thus far, and then spend the afternoon watching train videos.

Friday: A day off for most people.  Black Friday for the stores.  Why not browse the gift shop part of the museum website and plan to purchase needed Christmas gifts for all your loved ones from us?

Saturday: Another day off.  Whoohooo!  It will probably be a light volunteer day, so there may be puttering around on Loco 9 projects, painting the plow, and whatever else hits our fancy that day.

Work done on November 28:

Percival House: Bill was down in the basement fitting pieces of styrofoam in between the stringers of the floor and the top of the concrete wall.  Also Zack purchased at small catch basin for a future toilet and kitchen sink in the basement, Fred dug out a hole and Zack installed it and some pipe.

Loco 9: Jason continued working on the big casting.

Loco 10: Dana and Bob L worked to prep the locomotive for an inspection.

We also ran passenger trains a few different times, and sold some stuff in the gift shop.
