2008 Volunteer Hours

We are nearing that time of year again...when I enter everybody's hours from the log book into the computer and spit out thank-you letters for everyone's time.

Anybody who has any off-site time that they would like recorded, please be sure to get them my way in the next couple of weeks.  The list of people includes, but is not limited to: Keith, Ed, Allan, Frank, Bernie, Gordon, and others.

How critical are the off-site hours?  I spend an average of three hours a week working with GSA Augusta looking for surplus property that is currently on our "most wanted" list.  I started this after I was up there for the fall work weekend.

Off-site hours aren't all that critical.  You can have them counted them if you want to.  It helps boost our volunteer hours a bit.

Some examples: Keith Taylor does some machining at his house; Allan Fisher in the past counted his offsite duties both in California and back home in Maine (gift shop, newsletter, membership); Bernie Perch counts the hours working on patterns.

James,  I spent 16 hours working on the museum's Model A flatbed truck before it went to Maine.   The time was spent getting it in better mechanical shape and preparing it for the trip north.

OK I have the grand total of hours for 2008.

In 2008 we worked 14,770.60 hours.  I have 185 volunteers, although this lumps all the kids from the UNH Service Fraternity and Wiscasset HS Student Council together as 1 person each.  So well over 200 people again.

Total hours since the beginning of recorded history is 129,540.6

2008 is below 2007 and 2006.  But looking at the trend of yearly hours since 1997, one might conclude that 2007 and 2006 were abnormally high.  So make of that what you will.  When I look at a chart comparing month-to-month over the last several years, I could tell that May and June where when we really started hurting.  We didn't really start gaining until November.

I've finally gotten around to sending out volunteer thank-you letters.  If you haven't gotten yours by the end of the week, drop me a line.  I'm emailing those where possible, delivering by hand to the museum, and mailing those I don't have an email for.  And there are a number on the list I have no contact info for.

Yeah Dana, you don't want to lose your seniority by not coming around!  If you were a Massachusetts state worker you could add to your retirement amount by coming 'round once in awhile.
