I am confused; the last time you showed the upper windows in #9 they appearedd to be clear glass. But I remember seeing yellow textured glass ready to
go into the #3. Are different colors planned for the car windows?

The upper cleristory windows are a yellow textured glass. The photos you saw (on the previous page of this thread) are a little washed out - so the windows appear clear in the photo - but they are actually the yellow textured glass that perfectly matches what is found in Coach 3.

Thank you for the Clarification on the windows! I am really glad someone took the time to get the windows right!
Along with so many other details. The gold leaf work is looking wonderful!

I asked Tom Saturday if the letters were vynil because they were so sharp. They are not. All hand done. He said to a painter, that is the highest compliment you can give, asking if they are vynil.

In this month’s Finish Coach 9 to the Nines update we’ll take a look at some of the decorative details that have been added to coach 9 during the past couple months.

The exterior of the car is having its lettering and striping applied. Tom Fish has been hired by the museum to complete this task.

Tom is using gold leaf in the process of applying the striping and other details to the coach. The process begins by applying painter’s tape to set the boundaries for the stripes and to prevent paint from being applied where it shouldn’t be. Then Tom essentially “paints between the lines” formed by the tape.

Gold leaf doesn’t adhere well on its own, so the surface it is being applied to needs some sort of an adhesive to be brushed on beforehand. The adhesive being used is called sizing, which Eric Schade compares to slow drying varnish.

The lettering of coach 9 will be gold leaf with a shadow effect done in a shading of maroon and red. The process begins with Eric Schade designing the letters in a CAD program, then printing them out, with the correct spacing, on his industrial printer, in one long sheet. The sheet is cut into manageable lengths and taped to the letterboard of coach 9. The sheets are taped in such a way that they can be hinged downward. Once the sheets are taped up, Tom traces over the lettering with a pounce wheel, which pokes holes in the paper. He then wipes over the paper with a bag of chalk which leaves very tiny chalk dots on the coach. He follows the dots and applies the sizing, then “paints” the letters. After the gold leaf is applied, he can hinge the paper back up and repeat the process for the shadow lines. Below are photos of the process.

With the lettering and striping completed, the entire outside of the coach will get 2 or 3 coats of marine grade spar varnish to protect the artwork.


Here we see Tom as he pauses from working on the end of coach 9.



Some of the striping that has been completed, as well a tape applied for additional stripes to be added.



The sheets have been taped to the letterboard.

Here the sizing has been applied for the number 9, as well as the shadow lines.



The gold letters have been painted. The sheets will be taped back up and the shadow lines chalked in.



The finished result! A master at his craft – June 6, 2025.


On 6/6/2025 Tom completed all the striping and lettering on Coach 9. Tomorrow, he gives us THE BILL. We know it will be over his initial estimate, but the work he did is outstanding and deserves every penny he will receive.

I see that there is a plan to replicate the oil lamp in the Rangeley for the three misssing lamps in the W&W#3 and the new WW&F #9.
Please post a picture of the existing oil lamp for us away folks.

The lamps in the Rangeley are similar to, but not the same as, the lamps that were in W&Q coaches 2 & 3. To our knowledge, no examples of the exact lamp found in coaches 2 & 3 exist.

Attached is a photo of the interior of Coach 2 (or 3) and the catalog entry for this specific lamp.
A photo of a lamp found in the Rangeley is attached for comparison.

The cost to reproduce each lamp is about $3500 - $4000 each. Donations gladly accepted at www.wwfry.org/coach9

The masking for the exterior varnish was pulled off of by the coach 9 crew today and the windows were installed.
