October 2016 Work Planning

Anticipated work for weekend of October 1 - 2, 2016

* Turntable
* Boxcar 67
* ToM grading
* Work Weekend prep

Saturday evening there's an Alna VFD ham & bean supper (support our local fire department!) so some of our volunteers will disappear early.  That, plus the fact that it's the weekend between two busy weekends likely means fewer volunteers than normal.

Work done on Saturday October 1

* Top of Mountain: Mike went up early and did some grading before the first train.  A crew went up and replaced regular ties with switch ties, using the Kubota.  A few ties were also laid out.  The crane is at the end of track for use of the weekday crew.
* Turntable: Zack started working on the angled timbers.
* Archives: Linda wanted me to set up our new printer and scanner on the archives computer.  I was partially successful.  Note: if anyone coming to the FWW is Apple-savvy, Linda and I would like your help!

Also today -

* Tours - Black Sheep travel from Boston brought a bus load of MIT folks for the 10 o'clock train.  While we waited for them to arrive, a group from Helping up Maine arrived so we had to add coach 3 to accommodate both groups.  Think that the first train was just 3 cars??  Nope!  Mike needed the switch parts and ties at TOM so flat 126 was added to the consist making a 4 car train.  The MIT group liked riding a mixed train, especially when we told them that it doesn't happen that often.

* Future - The same travel company will be back next weekend with a group from the Smithsonian.

Also, I picked up all ties that had been swapped out along Davis Grade, and left them on the yellow work flat on the Roundhouse lead track for disposal

Craig...Thanks for your efforts.
That's the first complete view I've seen of the TOM clearing job.
And the now right-side-up-turntable is  getting finishing items--queen posts, truss rods and track before its final, permanent placement.
Love it!

Mike...Great to see prelim TOM spur work. I bet the MIT folks enjoyed seeing real railroad work.
Reminds me of Santa Fe Southern switching the local SF Budweiser warehouse during a passenger trip to Lamy.
  
The FWW Gandies should knock that whole job out late this coming week, no sweat!

* Yard - Firewood was stacked in the wood shed to get it out of the weather.

* Campus - Sonya Wyllie cleaned the house and restroom building.

Heads up...a National Weather Service internet map tonight (Tuesday) shows the projected path of Hurricane Matthew, after brushing coastal Georgia and the Carolinas, then moving up the East Coast, may reach southern Maine by late Sunday or early Monday.

67's prime mover, Zack, has been focused on the turntable.  He's planning on returning to the boxcar project thereafter.
