August 2016 Work Planning

Anticipated work for weekend of August 6 & 7:

* Turntable form work
* Boxcar 67
* Top of Mountain
* ROW Weed cutting

Whereas next weekend is the picnic, this weekend will probably be thin of volunteers.

The walking trail from Headtide South has been completed from sign post to sign post, The sloping sides at the North end have not been done! I hope next week to go South from 218 to Trout brook 4 Ft. wide.

Work done on Saturday August 6:

* Boxcar 67: Zack was cutting some lumber longitudinally for the roof, Marcel was working on some things.
* Turntable: Bob C. has been busy coating the big timbers with preservative.  The two that were vertical were a little too close together for Bob to paint in between them, so we got the tractor out and nudged it.  Bob was busy working on the area in between when I left.
* Yard Sale: Several of us moved yard sale material from House attic and car shop second floor to the basement.

Anticipated work for weekend of August 13 & 14: the Annual Picnic!

* Cooking, food serving
* Train operations and pretending to be someone from 1910
* Tour guides
* Music, old engines, and other good stuff

There will be a #9 125th birthday/restoration celebration on Saturday from 11:45 - 12:15.  The 12:30 trip will be in two sections, the first pulled by diesel to bring photographers along the line, the second #9 pulling all original WW&F equipment.  The VIPs from the celebration will be aboard this 2nd train.

Work done on Saturday August 13:

* Food - food crew was busy, we had a new cook (Keri) and she had a blast.  She has the job.
* Trains - We ran the regular passenger train until the PM, then we had two trains: the regular passenger train pulled by the diesel, usually a second section of the railcar, and an extra pulled by #9 of all the original equipment.  The original equipment train ran all afternoon.
* #9 ceremony: At 11:45 president Steve Zuppa kicked off a ceremony celebrating the return of the engine to service, and its 125th birthday.  Speakers were former president Larson Powell, #9 owner Dale King, State Senator Chris Johnson, and W&Q Treasurer Les Fossell.  Senator Angus King sent a message recognizing the return of #9 to service.
* Yard sale - Linda made some good money and spent it all!  The WW&F Palermo station sign was made available for purchase and she did.  Meanwhile someone is giving her a scanner and printer for the archives!
* Music from Bitter Brew
* Gift shop was hopping as well.

We get to do it all again tomorrow (except for the ceremony)

We did play a little with the shingle mill today. And I got to learn how to use our belt splicer from our Mill man, Dean. Sunday we may be tempted to see if the Continental will make the blade spin...

The afternoon runs with three trains on the line went well.  Written train orders were issued to each conductor and the crews followed the orders to a T ... even the Model T!

The evening photo special with #9 and the original train ran to TOM where a number of scenes were set up.  We also had scenes and run-bys at AC.  The photographers had a good time, one fellow had a new quad copter with a gopro camera sending video back to the control station.  It was interesting seeing TOM from the air.  The tired but happy train crew got back at 7:00 pm and managed to put everything away before it was totally dark.

Sunday will be easier with no extra mixed or special meets at TOM and AC.

Work done on Sunday, August 14th:

* Weather - Sunny, 92 degrees.  110 tickets sold (210 on Saturday)

* Food - More great chow from our cookout lunch crew.

* Boxcar #67 - Zack worked on the roof stringers.

* Trains - #9 pulled the trains all day and RC4 ran as the second section.  Good crowds on the trains.  

* Yard Sale - More stuff was sold so more $ made.

* Music - Bitter Brew played more of their wonderful music.

* Shingle Mill - Mike Fox started early setting things up (crane, etc.) to place the engine on flatcar 118 with the mill.  It didn't take long for Mike, Brendan and crew to move the engine and hook the mill up by flat belt drive.  Mike ran the mill and a few shingles were made.  Dana worked the mill when the train got back in, it was great to see the mill running after so many years.

* Media - A TV crew from WMTW came to shoot some B roll of the railroad and interview officers such as Pres. Steve Zuppa.  The piece should air tonight during the 6:00 broadcast.

Northbound extra with no. 9 and an all original equipment consist meets 52 with the scheduled southbound 12:30 pm passenger train. The Model T was following as a second section so 52 is flying green flags.
