July 2015 Work Planning

Anticipated work for weekend of July 4, 2015.  Happy Independence Day!

* Loco 9 - Jason will be delivering the jacket sheets to Cleveland, OH this weekend for treatment, so he will not be around.  But I'm sure others will be.
* Whitefield Section House - I'm assuming Vermont Steve and Annie are around
* Car barn
* Trains - the first weekend of steam for the summer.  I believe our crew callers need crew for both days still.
* Shingle mill put-away work

I am planning on my annual mowing on Friday, probably right after lunch if the grass is dry.

Mowing went well until the knife section broke. All spare parts were at RowMow Mfg. So some after train mowing next weekend.

Also, a little excavation work was done today inside the car barn trying to level it up. Too muddy, but we did get some stuff moved. Before I left, I used the tractor and drug more mud out and leveled up the ground the best I could, hoping it dries out.

Work done Saturday, July 4th -

* Steam trains and the railcar ran - not a busy day but a fair number of visitors including two people who got memberships.

* Car storage building - Zack and Fred worked on the north end door posts.  The posts are sistered with the end posts. 

* Road building gang - more work done on the upper yard spur crossing.  The crossing allows a truck to drive alongside the CSB, back to the tool house area.

* Whitefield Section House replica - A planning session was held at lunch time, deciding on the type of edging for the roof.  Materials will be picked up this coming week.

If the ice cream social is staffed well enough, I may try mowing North of Alna Center during the event since no trains will be running up there.

Hi Mike- new operating plan this year- trains are running to ToM all day... But mowing can be worked in.

Work done on Saturday July 11:

* Car barn - Several people were putting up the strapping on the roof.  Getting close to finishing the west side.
* Vehicle access - Yesterday and today Brendan was using the excavator to cut back the hill east of the Roundhouse run-through track so that vehicles can get in there.  Fred was taking the fill and putting it on the woods track road.
* Shingle mill stuff - Brendan, Mike and myself along with the Kubota helped empty the trailer of shingle mill equipment.  It's now living in the car shop extension.
* Loco 9 - Marcel worked on the cab some, Brendan was working on the tank some.
* Ice Cream Social - The first train of the day delivered the caboose and open car to the siding at AC.  The 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 stopped at AC in both directions dropping off and picking up people.  There were plenty games at AC: croquet, horse shoes, kite flying; in addition to music by Jud Caswell.

Work done on Sunday, July 12th:

* Wood lathe - Brendan and Steve P. rescued a nice old belt driven wood lathe and brought it back to Sheepscot on the WW&F trailer.  Some of the parts were brought into the north end of bay 2 near the old metal lathe. 

* Shingle mill - the oil was changed in the Continental engine on the power plant.

* Barry Lane - cinders are now being spread on the new road that goes up to the garden shed and tool shed (just north of the new crossing).

Septic heights cut back for vehicle access.



New wood lathe. Steve P. believes this is a pattern makers lathe because of the tool post. The lathe has been sitting unused in a barn for over 50 years and looks like it's had little use.

That's a gorgeous lathe -- great save! Do we know how old it is or where it was manufactured? Is the plan that it will be part of the future shingle mill/sawmill complex at TOM?
