Yesterday, another 30' of ties were set out on the main stem of the upper yard spur.  One stick of rail was set on the ties and we need to get another 30' piece (from MP 7) for the west rail.  More spiking is needed to get the track north of there safe for travel by construction equipment.  We plan to keep working southward... coal pocket or bust!

Work done on Aug 16:

I was in the steam engine most of the day (and I was busier than normal) so I didn't get to look around.  But I'll report what I can.

* Loco 9: Marcel was working on the cab.
* Grading: Mike was grading.  I didn't get a chance to see much of what he was doing.

Jason and Bob had re-arranged the steam dome arrangements on Loco 10 earlier in the week, putting on a steam loco pop valve, putting the state-code pop valve elsewhere, and putting in a different, single chime whistle.  The new whistle was not popular, especially with me being right next to it - too high pitched and loud.  They will rethink their plans.

Grading done at the Top of the Mountain Saturday saw more ditch work and a little grading. I was able to get the west ditch to drain by eliminating the camp road.  Brendan plans to do a little ditching also, hoping to aid in the drainage. I did pick up several small spikes, a broken track bolt, and 3 large joint bars, of the 56-60 pound variety. We now have 2 pair that we have found up there, and could use them up there someplace.

Work done on August 17th -

* R-O-W - Brendan did more grading work at ToM

* Percival House - A new wall light was installed in the main room.  The light should help with lighting the area when meetings, etc. are held after dark.

* Garage - Some cleaning was done around the work bench.

* Lunch - Brendan made a nice Italian pasta lunch with tasty sauce.

* Passengers - 65 people rode the rails.

I may be able to come up on Saturday 8/23.  If I do I'd like to work on the roundhouse lead in the upper yard.

Anticipated work for weekend of Aug 23:

* Grading
* Loco 9: No Jason this weekend, but he'll be around Monday/Tuesday
* Track work: I'd like to retry my tamping effort around Albee's Field before train time, then work on the Roundhouse Run-through track.

Saturday's Grading will be abbreviated. Brendan is unavailable and I am leaving at noon. Hoping to get in the last Culvert in and dig up the remaining sod between the 300 Foot sign and the camp road.

Work done on Saturday August 23:

* Grading: Mike worked in the morning, getting a culvert installed across the siding where the mainline grade starts downhill.  The machine was mired in mud when I visited on the 10 AM train, but he got out by the 11 AM train.
* Roundhouse run-through track: Dana headed the crew which consisted, at various times, of Stewart, Bill R, Dave B, Dave's neighbor whose name I have forgotten, Fred, myself, Ed, Steve Z, Duncan M, and others I am sure.  Mostly safety spiking, the track got "into" the roundhouse bay.
* #9: Steve P did some work on #9 before he and Anne headed home.  Not sure what he did!

#10's whistle has been slightly altered so that it is less shrill.  Not sure how it was done!

Thank you to everyone who showed up to work on the roundhouse track on Saturday.  There was a lot of work to do to get the track extended to the coal pile.  We laid out ties and we had to cut and drill several of the "chair factory" rails before we could lay them out and bolt them together.  The east rail was spiked for the entire length and then the track was gauged at every fourth tie (safety spiked).  Although the west rail spiking still needs to be completed it is now possible to run 10 to the coal pile for fueling.  It was a big job and a good day's work.

I found a pair of sun glasses on one of the ties where were working Sat. Gave them to the girls in the freight shed.

A little bit more about #9:
The part I made this week was a handle for the engineer's side injector.
Making the handle required setting up the wood lathe so that is now ready to go upstairs. There were a few others odds and ends.

Thanks Fred for grabbing those glasses.  They are mine.  They must've fallen out of my pocket when I was spiking.  I guess we'll need to come back soon to get them!  Maybe we can spike that west rail while we are there!  It was great to see the progress on the roundhouse lead this week!
