Weather Report?
« on: February 02, 2011, 11:10:14 AM »
How's the weathah up theah? How many feet on the ground? (noo, not human feet, depth of snow)
I thought they were saying it would be global WARMING....  ;D
Here in Central Massachusetts it's beginning to look like the top of Mount Washington. I think that I'm going to build a snow shed from my front door to my garage.  >:(
Trying to drive is a nightmare with all the snow piles, you need a mirror on your hood because by the time you poke your hood out so you can see, you're halfway out in the road. I may even buy snow tires for the first time ever. Even my cats are getting cabin fever, and they don't even go outdoors!
From the radar it looks like Alna is getting dumped on, too, and I bet clearing the line will be pretty interesting in mid-March unless we get a major thaw. We may want to start early on that task if we want to run that March train?
Sure wish we had #9 in service, that extra weight and TE would be handy to have this spring.

Hi Gordon,  We had about 2ft of snow prior to yesterday when 3" more showed up.  Now it's snowing hard, about 2-3" an hour.  This storm will bring another 16-18" of snow.  It's supposed to clear off tomorrow mid day and be sunny on Friday into Saturday morning.  More snow will arrive Saturday evening but there is no prediction of accumulation yet.

I remember James' post a few years ago ...  Ok Winter, I surrender!!

We turned to rain down here around Boston, and a number of roof collapses have occurred.  A hangar collapsed the next town over at Norwood airport today.

I assume the new car barn will have a steep-pitched roof to shed snow loads.
We want...A SHRUBBERY!  One that looks nice, and not too expensive.

Have not heard of any roof problems in Maine, maybe because there hasn't been as much snow (until now) as CT, MA and others have. I know what you mean about the snow banks.  Cindy and I went to Stafford, Ct last thursday so we would be close to Springfield for the Big E show. Stafford had just gotten another big storm in fact Stafford and northern CT has set an all-time record for January snowfall.  The snow banks were hugh! As Gordon said, pulling out into the street is a real challenge. We spent all afternoon clearing snow off of the roof of Cindy's Grandmothers home.  Some are calling the string of storms "snowpocolipse".  Clarissa told me that her father used to call these back-to-back events "line storms"  She said they were common in the 1920s.

I think the WW&Fs car storage building will have a roof pitch similar to the new car storage building at Boothbay.  I forget the ratio but it has a good pitch.  Another thing that would help is having a standing seam metal roof.  Snow doesn't stack up as much on those.

Well,  Gotta go shovel the porch and walk again.  I've shoveled my porch 4 times and there's another 5 plus inches on it, and it's a covered porch,  Sheeesh!

While here in the Denver area, it is just plain COLD.
Last Friday, we tied a record at 73* downtown. This morning it was -17*. How is that for a temperature swing!
We only got about 3" of snow out of the whole deal.

Hey Ira,  Looks like Alna got your Colorado snow.  The yard looks more like Marshall Pass than Sheepscot.  We start building snow sheds this weekend  :o

Maybe a 2' gauge Jordan Spreader should be on the "to do" list?

Yep, Ct is getting hit hard, I think I saw some of those glaciers last weekend.  Wednesday I heard that a 3 story building collapsed in Middletown.  Fortunately no injuries, the occupants got out quick when they heard the roof cracking and saw bricks falling out into Main Street.

Alna is doing a little better - weather is sunny today, high around 30 with overnight lows in the single digits.  Partly cloudy Saturday with snow moving in during the afternoon.  Coastal areas will get an additional 4" of snow with higher amounts in the mountains.  Skies will clear mid day Sunday with temps reaching the mid to upper 30s.  Good weather for working in the shop.

Yes, it would be good for working in the shop if I could ever get there.  I have been trying to get my firewood cut since New Year's Day.  Had a good start but now it is slow going with 3 feet of snow in the woods. One year I cut wood while on snowshoes and then went back in the spring and cut down all of the 4 foot high stumps! To top it all off, after 17 years my snowblower surrendered to winter so now I have to go out and get a new one on Saturday so I can clear out the snow we're supposed to get Sat night.  It's certainly turned into a good old fashoined Maine winter.  Just remember, the worst blizzards of 1920, that buried the WW&F, came in March!  I hope to see Sheepscot again soon so please stop with the snow dances already.

Good thing you did, Stewart.  This afternoon in Stafford, half a block collapsed:

Jon,  Cindy's brother called us last night to tell us about the Stafford collapse.  We went on line and saw the report.  The buildings that collapsed were on Main Street, just two doors down from the restaurant we went to last Saturday night.

Well, I saw that building in Middletown today, what a mess!
I was dropping my G gauge stuff back off at Amato's for running later this month. The building that fell in is about 1 block North (toward the Arrigonni Bridge) from the toy store on the same side of the (Main) street.
Scary what a little snow can do to solid brickwork.
