A few shots from Owosso of America's newest steam locomotive, the
Leviathan
. She is quite spectacular in person, and a real crowd pleaser. Fun seeing her steaming onto the SRI's turntable -- being spun round and round, presented to the crowd like the fanciest of new cars in an auto show. This was a terrific event and one that I sincerely hope will be repeated in the future.

Looks high tech. What are the five Ws and the H of its construction? Who, what, when, where, why and how? Oh, yeah, and drawbar pull.

This
Leviathan, built by Dave Kloke at his shop near Chicago, is a reproduction of the original, which was built in 1869 by Schenectady Locomotove Works. Dave got the idea to build his own engine after visiting the Henry Ford Museum and seeing some of the older locomotives there. He began construction in 1999, and finished only a few months ago. Leviathan was a sister locomotive to the
Jupiter
of Golden Spike fame, and in fact Dave was able to obtain patterns from the NPS' reproduction Jupiter in order to build her. Drawbar pull? No idea..although an oil burner, she's set up with a link and pin arrangement!

Man, a lot of people can't get their 1/8th scale engines built that fast. Does it have a cast frame or built up? Also, does the builder have a website?
