We are not going to be able to screen this area, it will likely create a traffic problem during operation. Last week while spiking down the turntable ring rail we had a southbound motorist stop in the middle of the road east of the table location get out and come around to the front of his car and yell over asking what we were building. That was for 4 vehicles and 6 guys, now imagine a steam engine on the table and a train sitting on the passing track. This will not be screen able but will likely create traffic issues in this area.

Knowing the end of track area well and working at the turn table site for a couple days I think you will find that Steve and Jason are both right. The fence might sound and look good but will offer little more than that. The turn table site will be a curious site for all that pass by for a long time.

The turn table site will be a curious site for all that pass by for a long time.

And I think that is a very, very good thing.

We hear it all the time that "I only live next door and I never heard of you guys." Having a visible presence on 218 will garner a lot more interest and visibility for the railroad.

I doubt that we will normally keep anything at Trout Brook/218 when we aren't there. (For example, park a locomotive or car on the stub past the turntable.) Just as the Sheepscot turntable (and all mainline switches) are locked, the same would apply for this turntable.

Finally, we do have to somehow figure out how to connect the Trout Brook Preserve hiking trail to the WW&F ROW trail across the street.

Should we be having a conversation with the Conservancy folks about integrating their trail(s) with ours? One of their trails end across Trout Brook from our property, lacking only a bridge over the stream to connect to the road to Porcupine Palace, I believe. Figuring out how to connect with the Head Tide ROW trail may be a more difficult goal.

Very preliminary discussions with MidCoast Conservancy are underway. That said, connecting the trails at Trout Brook/218 should be easy. Connecting the trails at ToM (behind porcupine palace) will require significant effort of about 1/2 mile of new trail (not to mention a bridge over Trout Brook.)

Signage/kiosk at 218/Trout Brook at the roadway may run afoul of state/local sign ordinances. But maybe we could figure something out (beyond what is already planned, which does include a station building shared with Midcoast Conservancy.

I think the worry of traffic snarls is unfounded. For 2019, Maine DOT daily traffic counts for Route 218 are 1,150 south of Dock Rd, and 1,040 north of W Alna Rd. No value for that section of 218 specifically, but we can extrapolate. Let's assume the worst: A slightly higher traffic count of 1200, and everyone travels in the compressed 12-hour span from 0600 to 1800. The math conveniently comes out to 100 cars per hour, or a little less than one car per minute each direction. Surely "one car per minute" can contend with a temporary obstruction.

As far as being a "distraction" or a "hazard" or a "curiosity": interesting stuff is happening literally all the time, everywhere. And people will gawk at it. Exhibit A: Me myself and I, Gawker-in-Chief. Just ask my wife ;D If someone, like the gentleman described above, makes poor decisions regarding where to park his vehicle in relation to a public road, that is, quite frankly, not our problem. To be sure, there are instances where folks use their property in a manner which "disturbs the peace". I do not believe a properly-operated tourist railroad such as WW&F disturbs the peace.

I'm thinking that it may be necessary to have No Parking signs along the road but that would be up to the town and DOT.
The shrubbery should fill back in quickly which would block much of the turntable from the road other than the entrance.
It certainly will be an interest to many people as they drive by. The increased awareness of the railroad could lead to more people coming to visit and volunteer!

It's safe to say that there will be increased railfan and photographer activity in that area, especially on weekends and during special events. We see some of that at the grade crossings now. There may be dangerous situations created because of parked cars and pedestrians.
I would assume that we've discussed this with the appropriate authorities and have an understanding of any concerns.

We do have a large gate, should a problem with vehicles trying to access the grade. We have had the sawhorses I made for several years now and have worked just fine, and are not too distracting. I think the only thing we may have is the curious ones walking to check things over.. So I agree with Jason.

Also, we do not need no parking signs in that area. We put them up along the south side of Cross Road as part of an agreement with the town. If we leave where the grade and 218 meet as I have it now, then there will still be plenty of room to pull off and park..

[Moderator's Note]
A discussion regarding signage at Trout Brook (and elsewhere) has been split and moved to the Museum Discussion section of the Forum.
