Heading north back towards the bridge in the railroad's truck. We were dropping off rolls of road cloth about every 350 feet for track construction.

Jeff Verney cut down the gravel ramps leading up to the bridge put in for truck traffic. Gravel had to be added on the north side of the bridge to take the dip out of the grade coming off the bridge.

Gravel cut down on the south side of the bridge. The grade had been built right up to the bridge decking.

The north side of the bridge.

Fabric laid out on the grade from the end of track.

The track that was laid last week.

Thanks Brendan for the pics and reports. It looks that everything is on the right track to make Trout Brook Preserve within October. it 'll be great to see #9 on the bridge and beyond.

Wire was installed from the north end of Sawmill Curve to about 100 feet from the bridge today.

Removed some dirty material from the south side of the bridge and constructed a new ramp to get onto the north end of the bridge (Contractor Jeff removed the ramp he put in).

Now I need to talk Contractor Jeff into backing over the bridge one last time with a load of Rip-Rap to cap off the slopes in the shoreland zone by the bridge.

Some photos from today (Saturday) showing spiking and phone line placement north toward the bridge.
What–me worry?

I see white rectangles at each end of the bridge. Reflective tape?

Jeff,  I think that is where access panels were cut to inspect the bridge timbers.

My guess would be reference markers for the truck driver as he backed in to deliver material.  Rather important to be lined up correctly.

He mentioned he didn't like looking down as he got on or off the bridge - all he would see is water.

The white strips are the tops and bottoms of the access doors to the bolts that hold the bridge down. They are only in primer currently.

Mike,

Good to know the bridge is bolted down.  We wouldn't want the bridge to fly away like Alice's house in the Wizard of Oz.

{Seriously, I do know why the bridge is bolted down.}

I am not sure the bolts are in there yet, but they had been working on it, drilling the holes.

More progress today on the extension. Spending a lot more time than planned running wire.. But still looks like I'll finish next Sunday at the latest.

7am, Contractor Jeff had dropped 2 loads of erosion stone, one north and one south of the bridge.

Fall is making it's appearance..

A look at the south pile of erosion stone. 40 minutes later it was gone. Museum truck in the distance with ballast.

Had to move the log out of the shoreland zone..

Burying the wire to the bridge. I ran it through waterline for extra protection.

Someone left me a nice access point for installing the conduit in the bridge. After some struggles, finally installed. It lays on the 2×4 runners inside the wall.

With the pile on the North side taken care of, I backed the truck across the bridge to unload the ballast. 2 or 3 more loads next weekend and the south approach will be done.

Looking South from Casey..

Sand bar shot of the bridge.

Looking at EOT from the bridge

Left to do...

Saturday..

Ballast the rest of the south side of the bridge, to get it out of the shoreland zone.

Install the waterline/conduit on the north side of the bridge and run the wire in it. I would like help with this. Getting the wire in this morning by myself was rather a pain but got it done.

Bury the rest of the wire north of the shoreland zone.

Ballast north of the bridge about 130 feet, getting out of the shoreland zone.

Sunday, unless I am able to do these Saturday...

Ditch on the west side of where the frog will be. There was a brush pile there last year when I ditched.

Cut down a couple other spots in the ditches by the passing siding. I was expecting to build up the grade more than we did. Now that we have a solid surface, I can quickly cut that down.

Lastly, flatten out the stone through the curve. The truck traffic has settled the outside, and don't want the track set on high center.

I hope to join you Saturday.  If the corner lot by Cross Road and Route 218 hasn't been brush hogged this coming week, I'll need to spend some time cutting Saturday with the blade trimmers.  The lot might be needed for volunteer parking Saturday & Sunday of Fall Work Weekend.
