Humason/Trout Brook/ROW water erosion
« on: June 26, 2009, 03:07:57 PM »
With all of the winter snow and now the heavy Northeast rains , are there any erosion problems that have popped up? Obviously this has been a problem in the past which is why there are 2 washouts and a landslide north of TOM . Has anyone ventured up there recently to see what it all looks like? What about the rest of the ROW?
When the Humason bridge/trestle was rebuilt how where the footings/abutments built? concrete, timbers, stone?  And as for the Trout brook, was the bridge removed or did it wash out?  What kind of footings/abutments are planned for it?

The original trestle at Humason was built with the bents in the stream bed. Abuttments were wood and were rebuilt as such, to closely resemble the original structure. There have been no erosion problems there.
The problems farther up the line in the uncleared, ungraded section were due to the ditches filling up with soil. The water sought the easiest way out, which in one case eroded the ROW.
The slide that occured was from about the same reason. Accept the trees were weighing down the bank and once they got so heavy, they just took off. The water had seeped through just under the surface, making the bond that the topsoil had with the clay slick. Water was still dripping into the slide a week or so later when I saw it.
If the railroad had made it to either of those locations before the washouts happened, they never would have. With proper ditching, The ROW should last a long time. Barring of course some astronomical storm.

Love that style of photo, Stephen. I'll have to let you show me how to do that some day.

Another in the long FFFSH series (Fine Foto from Stephen Hussar)! Thanks, Stephen. Do you recall, or have a note of, how long the shutter was open for this picture?

Thanks! As I recall I used a .6 ND filter and left the shutter open for 3 seconds. The afternoon sun coming through the trees was a happy accident...I didn't see it until I moved the camera a couple of inches, after having first shot several exposures from this angle.
Sure would look nice with No 9 in the frame, heading north -- about to cross the brook...hint, hint  ;)
