WW&F Railway Museum Receives Conservation Bookshelf

ALNA, ME – Treasured objects and artifacts held by the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway Museum will be preserved for future generations with help from the IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf, a core set of conservation books and online resources donated by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). IMLS has now awarded almost 3,000 free sets of the IMLS Bookshelf, in cooperation with the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH).

“When IMLS launched this initiative to improve the dire state of our nation’s collections, we understood that the materials gathered for the Bookshelf would serve as important tools for museums, libraries, and archives nationwide,” said Anne-Imelda Radice, Director of IMLS. “We were both pleased and encouraged by the overwhelming interest of institutions prepared to answer the call to action, and we know that with their dedication, artifacts from our shared history will be preserved for future generations.”

The Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway Museum will receive this essential set of resources based on an application describing the needs and plans for the care of its collections. The IMLS Bookshelf focuses on collections typically found in art or history museums and in libraries' special collections, with an added selection of texts for zoos, aquaria, public gardens, and nature centers. It addresses such topics as the philosophy and ethics of collecting, collections management and planning, emergency preparedness, and culturally specific conservation issues.

The IMLS Bookshelf is a crucial component of Connecting to Collections: A Call to Action, a conservation initiative that the Institute launched in 2006. IMLS began the initiative in response to a 2005 study it released in partnership with Heritage Preservation, A Public Trust at Risk: The Heritage Health Index Report on the State of America’s Collections. The multi-faceted, multi-year initiative shines a nationwide spotlight on the needs of America’s collections, especially those held by smaller institutions, which often lack the human and financial resources necessary to adequately care for their collections.

For a more detailed description of the prize package, along with a list of the 906 other winners, visit: http://www.imls.gov/news/2009/061709.shtm

I'm hoping that these resources will help us to mature our museum in many ways.

Sounds great.  We certainly need to protect and preserve our collection(s).  I've read IMLS goals and whatnot on their web site, also watched their video.  But, what actually will it mean to our museum and its collection(s). We have everything from simple paper tickets to historic railroad equipment.  Will we, with their aid, build a proper repository for the "paper" collection(s)?  Will they help with building a roundhouse and car storage barn that will be at least fire proof and weather resistant?  I am sure that our Board of Directors and a "Preservation" Committee will a have a lot planing to do in order maximize the preservation of the museum's collection for the future generations.    Maybe they mean to give us a high speed internet connection and a proper scanner to scan and transfer our "paper" collection to a "Great Archive of the Nation's Treasures".  It will being interesting to follow the progress.  I only fear grantor oversight of the "materials" provided through this grant.  Just watch out for the strings!

When I applied for the grant, there didn't appear to be any strings. The materials they are sending are meant to aid us in doing some of the things you describe. We are free to use these materials and advice, or not.

Here are few more useful links...
Overview of the Collection & Program:

List of Materials we are receiving....

They are not providing funding for specific preservation projects with this grant of materials. However, I'm hoping that some of the resources that they send will include tips on getting such funding.

My wife Rebecca worked for many years with the archives for a major historical society. I asked her to look at this award and here's her report:

"The IMLS Bookshelf is a wonderful concept, and I am sure it includes crucial and vital information about conserving materials held by organizations such as your own.  I looked at the list of recipients and you are in good company. Most of the organizations are small and many have diverse collections like yours.  For example there are the following rail oriented organizations:

Cotton Belt Rail Historical Society Inc. - Pine Bluff, AR
Lomita Railroad Museum - Lomita, CA
Nevada Northern Railway Museum - Ely, NV
Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania - Strasburg, PA
Martin & Frances Lehnis Railroad Museum - Brownwood, TX
Northwest Railway Museum - Snoquaimie, WA
Grafton B&O Railroad Heritage Center - Grafton, WV

This is a resource that will be extremely helpful, if you use it.  The next step is to determine how and by whom it is going to be used.  It is a tool to help with planning (especially emergency planning!), and prioritizing your goals. It will also be a great resource for answers to practical conservation questions. I look forward to hearing how the IMLS Bookshelf has helped the WW&F Railway Museum."
