Shop Crane Extension

Yesterday, a small crew worked in the shop to get the crane rails ready for today. The end rails had to be removed because they are ends. The Friday crew accomplished the removal of the first one. Here is a picture of the East rail that we removed today.


Here is a pic of the longer West rail in place.



Here, we have also installed the East rail and hung (after a little effort) the new Bridge. This is going to be limited to the south end of the building due to clearance issues.



Zack is seen here putting up one of the hangars for the next section



And finally, the end of the day, we had the new sections in place. Now to add the old ends back on. More drilling but atleast the drill bit is sharp.

that extended crane will be wonderfull for lifting something like a wheelset onto the big lathe.

One other question.  How are the crane rails held to the Beams?

There are brackets that bolt to the floor stringers. Then there are threaded rods that go between the brackets and crane rails. This allows for adjustment to keep the rails level.

The parts that came this time were all yellow, but the crane rails that were there before were green.  So the new rails were painted green.  The gantry was put up with its as-delivered color and lettering.

  James,  Thanks for the reply to the yellow paint question.  The rail really looks good in green.  I noticed the shop picture in the latest news letter, when will the large pile of rock be moved or is for some special project?  The new windows in the old part of the shop with the light fixture above the door makes the building look just great.       Thanks,  Fred L. Fred, the stone you see in the picture in the newsletter is actually gravel. This is what was left from filling in the low spots before ballasting this spring. This will eventually be loaded onto flatcars (if it wasn't all done yesterday) and used in the construction of a crossing or two.

  Mike,   Thanks for your reply about the pile of gravel.  Will the out door sign of the WW&F be replaced on the south wall next to the road?  Its great to see work progress into the busy season of train action.      Thanks  Fred L. Kuhns

Fred, The large WW&F sign was found to have rotten wood when it was taken down. It needs to be rebuilt before it is remounted on the new south end of the shop. It will not be remounted until the frount of the shop is painted.
