where to stay for work session
« on: February 13, 2009, 10:58:02 AM »
Which of the several motels in the area is favored by the volunteers. I plan to be there for the spring work session.

Mike;
Definitely the Wiscassett Motor Lodge on Route 1. Nancy and Bill are long time supporters of the Museum. Tell them you are a Museum volunteer and you may get a discount. They're probably closed for the winter now. Try calling in early March.

For the budget minded(cheap) the Pioneer Motel in Edgecomb across the bridge from Wiscasset is $40/night and several of us have stayed there. Older but OK.

I stayed at the Pioneer one time when the Motor Lodge was closed for the winter. There's a reason why it's cheap. It's a dump. I didn't want to step out of the shower with bare feet it was so dirty. Stick with Bill and Nancy.

Don't ask me. I only cut the grass. Oops, I don't even do that anymore.

What about the Schooner Inn?  Any comments on it?

I stayed there about a month ago. It was older, but fine.

Has the Pioneer in Edgecomb changed hands in the last several years?
My room was clean and the shower area, too. I am pretty fussy about that and I did not notice any housekeeping problem.
Dave Crow was several rooms down from me so maybe he has some input, too.

Perhaps the board might consider allowing volunteers to sleep in the second floor space created above the new addition to the shop. Each individual could bring his own cot, sleeping bag, pillow and teddy bear. Such volunteers might also be allowed to shower and shave in the bathroom in the Percival House.

I thought the Pioneer Motel was okay.  As a place to shower and sleep during work weekends, it did the trick.  I do agree it felt a little seedy, so I doubt I would ever stay there with my wife.  She does like Wiscasset Motor Lodge, although she wants to try the Inn/Resort just across the bridge in Edgecomb on our next trip...

I cannot recommend sleeping in the new second floor space because there's no second exit.

I agree with Dave and Steve.  My wife and I have been staying at the Wiscassett Motor lodge for many years.  The rooms are always clean and neat.  Bill and Nacy are great folks to deal with and talk to.  After you have stayed a few times they remember you and the room(s) you prefer so "your" room is waiting when you call to reserve.

Vincent,
Go to www.wiscassetmotorlodge.com for a full listing of rates plus some pics of the motel. The rates vary depending upon the time of year and the desired room.

Gee, although the rates are rather modest, i still couldn't do it for a whole weekend.  Maybe i could reserve room 320 at sheepscott station....

I've wondered about this myself. Or even sleeping on the station/freight house floor?
I remember my first visit, (over 12 yrs ago,) I stayed the night on what is now the station/wating room area, although it was not finished.
If only 3 or 4 people wanted to do this, it's hard to see it being a big problem. I know if I were to "rough it" this way this year I'd sure like some company overnight.  ;)
