What to Name the new Excavator?
« on: February 13, 2024, 02:04:28 PM »
As you may have heard, we received a substantial donation from Rich and Caroline Tower of the Candelaria Fund to purchase a new excavator. This unit is specifically sized to be used on the railroad (via a special equipment cart) for changing ties, ditching projects, brush cutting, and a plethora of other maintenance tasks.

We have a tradition of applying informal, fanciful names to certain pieces of equipment, such as "Ichabod" crane car, "Millie" the ex-military forklift, "Case-y" the Case bulldozer, etc. The old Kubota was never given a name that stuck (at least in polite company) so that has been just called "the Kubota".

The BOD would like to choose a name that honors the donors, and have proposed two suggestions. We are open to more ideas.

Although I love Tower of Power - for the music, it's not an equipment name.

Now, since the Kubota is being designed for multiple tasks I would suggest that it be named "JACK".  As in "jack of all trades" which is befitting of its purpose.

Merging the popular Candy with Tower.. I recommend Candower pronounced Can-Doer.

Since it's an excavator, I resubmit "Digby."
If we want to honor the Navies who helped build the railroads (and canals, etc.) we can call it "Digby O'Del."
March is coming up, so we could hold a proper christening on St Paddy's day! ;) ;D

I suspect that the name chosen will in some way honor either Candelaria or Tower.

And while the Kubota is commonly considered an excavator, its primary job at the WW&F is track maintenance. In that role, the 'thumb' is a key component, and the ability to swap the bucket for a different tool is important too.

So in that spirit,  'Tower Thumb Tool' or T3 AKA T-Cube

- or -

'Tower Track Tool' or T3 AKA T-Cube

 ;D

Yes, the intent is to honor the donors (as was done with "Wilmar" the Tamper for Australia donated by Wilmar Sugar Co.)

I like... 'Tower Track Tool' or T3 AKA T-Cube
So that is going on the list of names to vote for.

I also added the other names (meeting the requirement to honor the donors) suggested thus far to the poll. Feel free to change your votes. This is all non-binding, anyway, the intent is to get a sense of what everyone prefers.

Since I have the nickname of B superscript 2 or B squared, I changed my vote to T cube.

"Tie Master" (since it's intended for use in replacing ties).
