But I can't help wondering about the ". . , , , &" at the bottom of the sign. Is that some sort of secret code? 
Or just a shortage of available pockets in the letter storage case? 
The bottom is hidden when the glass front is closed. Much easier to find these characters when needed for signboard updates than digging through the one pocket in the storage case that holds all the special characters.
