Needed-photos of the Museum and it’s members for a book

All,
We have been approached by Arcadia Publishing about doing a book for them. Since the original railroad has been covered in many books we have decided that it will be about the Museum itself. As such, we are looking for photographs mainly since the Humason Brook bridge was completed. That was about the time everyone started going digital. Linda has many photos prior that time.
If you have any and would like to see them published in our book, please submit them to Linda Zollers at archivist@wwfry.org with a copy to bill.reidy@wwfry.org; Gail.buczkowski@gmail.com; and David.buczkowski@wwfry.org. We will be covering all areas of the Museum - shop work, buildings, track work, operations, gift shop - everything. We especially want photos of people both familiar and not so familiar. Please be sure to include your name, date of photo and location. Please also identify anyone in the photos. You will also probably be asked to sign a permission form by Arcadia. Please note well that you will retain ownership of your photos. Send as many as you would like. Make sure to send high res versions suitable for publishing. You will also receive credit in the book. There will be extra credit for photos of me looking like I’m actually doing something productive.

By necessity that will be made by the publishers. The book committee (Linda, Bill and Gail) will submit probably an excess of photos to the Arcadia folks. We have been told to only submit high quality (res) photos to them so that will be a limiting factor.  This is not a contest. Photos that best show the Museum, it’s history and it’s people will be used.

Will this be published in black & white or color? Most of Arcadia's books are b&w, but they've done some color recently. It makes a big difference in choosing a photo that will reproduce well.

Good question Andrew. I don’t have an answer to that. Maybe Bill has the answer, Gail will check the paperwork she has from Arcadia.

I haven't been part of the direct conversation(s) with Arcadia, but the paperwork I've seen is focused on their "Images of America" series, described as follows:  "With more than 200 vintage black-and-white photographs, each title celebrates a town or regions, bringing to life the people, places, and events that defined the community."

If this publisher is who I think it is, you probably have seen their books in many commercial places (bookstores, tourist stores, even hardware stores).  Paperbacks, about 5" x 8".  Sepia front color.  All photos Black and White inside.  Focused on local history.

I had been asked by Arcadia Books to do a history of the WW&F over twenty years ago - but was too busy. There are literally hundreds of these "Images of Rail" books that have been published. We sell over 100 of these books at our Western Railway Museum store,

The nice thing about the Arcadia "Images of America" and " Images of Rail" series of books is that they are never out of print. They do an initial run of 500-1000 copies, and when these are all sold, they wait until they have orders for 25 or more copies, and reprint the book.

Maine Narrow Gauge Railroads

The narrow gauge railroad arrived in the United States in the late nineteenth century. Based on the Welsh two-foot gauge, the American narrow gauge was expanded by railroad engineers to a three-foot gauge that became the standard track width for narrow gauge railroads in the United States. Maine, however, adopted the two-foot gauge that was developed by George E. Mansfield in Massachusetts. The narrow track width was ideally suited to the mountainous terrain, and the maneuverability of the trains proved highly beneficial to companies and passengers traveling to remote locations. The narrow gauge railroad served Maine for over fifty years until the early 1940s. Maine Narrow Gauge Railroads is a comprehensive pictorial record of the history of the narrow gauge railroad in Maine. From the one-hundred-twelve-mile Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad to the five-mile Kennebec Central, Maine Narrow Gauge Railroads features the toylike miniature trains of Maine as they appeared at different stages in their history. The Bridgton and Harrison Railroad, the Monson Railroad, and the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway lines are documented within, as well as the current restoration projects that are under way.
