I was along on that trip, in fact it was to pick up a new Hurco SM1 milling machine which I obtained through a friend in MA for FREE. This is a major step up from our old Bridgeport we have in the shop now. There is discussion ongoing as to replacing the Bridgeport with this or keeping both. There are uses for both.

Today I reassembled the machine and started a full cleaning.

Those old round ram “M” head Bridgeports make really stout drill presses!

Big thanks to Ron for arranging the deal in the first place, and to everyone who made it's retrieval happen! This should be yet another step in the direction of making our shop user-friendly.

Work done on Saturday May 7:

* Vehicle work: Mike worked on the front end loader (brake system), backhoe (more hoses), and the dozer.
* Machine shop: Ron was working to clean up the blue Smurf Milling (or is it a Thomas Milling) machine, while Alan was working on the Trout Brook turntable center casting.
* Mother's Day Tea: Ed and others set up for the tea in the Pavilion, and must have broken it down too.
* Volunteer Hours recording handover: Ben Richards' wife has asked to take over this job, so he and I sat down to transfer the database and tried to figure out the fiddly computer bits needed to make it happen.
* Annual Meeting: a small attendance, the meeting took only a half hour.

The Mother's Day Tea event was fantastic! Guests seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. They particularly appreciated the gentle breeze that kept the black flies elsewhere. Here are a couple of photos to show what the caterer, Maine Tasting Center, provided. It was really top notch. I expect we'll see more, and better, photos from "Start" shortly.

I didn't take many photos today, but Cody and I happened to be there when Alan had a significant breakthrough on the turntable screw. Here he is muscling his way through some rough threads. Photo credit: Cody.

Must be a Smurf machine. It doesn't have a smiling face on it. :o

The shaft I was trying to remove on the dozer was a fighter. So, I lubed up a bolt and threaded it in the center of the shaft.

First couple of tries, I had to hit the bolt to jar the shaft loose. This allowed me to remove it with only a 3/8 ratchet.

Kept shimming with various objects until I got it free.

Old vs. new

And Alan trying to clean the threads on the upper portion of the center pivot of the B&SR turn table.
