WW&F No. 53 - Official Work Thread
« on: April 01, 2022, 07:12:02 PM »
Observant members and visitors to Sheepscot recently may have noticed a section of standard gauge track under construction. Or perhaps their curiosity was piqued by a recent "April Fools" posting on social media. They may have wondered what’s going on. The WW&F is, after all, a two-foot gauge railway.

Here’s the rest of the story. For the better part of three years, we have been looking for just the right diesel locomotive to supplement our trusty No. 52. We needed something to plow snow, pull work trains, handle trains on the Mountain Extension, and (perish the thought) rescue a stalled steam train.

We spent a lot of time seeking a suitable locomotive. We wanted a double-truck unit that would not punish our track. We wanted something with plenty of power to do what we needed. We thought there might be a chance for an Australian sugar cane locomotive, but all that was available was an 0-6-0 diesel hydraulic not much larger than No. 52. We looked into British and French units, and we even looked into eastern European diesel hydraulics, but nothing quite fit.

We thought maybe we could salvage the remains of a wrecked GE and rebuild it. We considered building our own from the ground up. We even considered a commercial rebuild and a battery-electric. But in the end, nothing seemed quite right.

After considerable thought and consultation, we finally decided to seek a small standard gauge locomotive that could economically be modified to meet our needs, and in mid-February, we found a 1941 General Electric 45-ton side-rod diesel in Sunbury, Pa. that seemed to meet our criteria, which we were able to purchase at scrap price.

Over the last several weeks since we purchased the locomotive, the engineering of the conversion was taken in hand, with a thorough plan already laid out. This is going to be an interesting and exciting project, and If you like to volunteer, contact Jason Lamontagne at the museum.

That’s what the standard gauge track is for. No. 53 will arrive at Sheepscot by truck in May and will be unloaded onto the new track now under construction. Over the next year or three, the trucks will be overhauled and rebuilt to two-foot gauge, a new propulsion system utilizing one of its two diesel engines and traction motors will be installed, snowplow pilots will be fabricated for both ends, and most significantly, the entire locomotive including the cab will be reduced in width to fit our clearances, and its weight will be reduced by about 10 tons. And who knows, it may eventually even have an alternative battery propulsion system.

Note the new updated power, to become No 53, for the re-gauged WW&F. Notice how Mike replicated the new tie spacing to reduce track expenses for the expanded railroad into Canada. Also, as a bone to the traditionalist the new standard gauge power retains the driving rods in a nod to the smoky, smelly dirty steamers of old.

Ah! Outside frame trucks, can be narrowed easier than conventional ones I would think.

I wondered if this was the diesel the museum was getting, after Wayne and I had exchanged several emails.

When the #53 is delivered later this month; please look up and post the GE Construction Number.
Also what kind of Diesels are in them unit. I beelieve someone re-powered it during its long career.
I would like to keep my WW&F roster up to date, with as much information as possible.

Now that it is here; I remember a thread a couple of years ago, discussing Russian, South African or Australian locomotives. With an American product there will not be the need for purchasing a lot of Metric tooling to work on the conversion!

The data plates on this locomotive are long gone. It may be GE c/n 15016. Someone posted that on another forum, but I have no clue if it's accurate.

Will Instacorp have to start manufacturing Instatrak (TM) in a new, larger size? The anti-roll features in the design will have to be strengthened. In a more serious vein, there will be plenty of ties needed to support the 35 tons.

Jeff, my understanding is that the original plan was to purchase a former USN Porter locomotive which had ring gear issues on one truck. At the last minute Wayne found this GE which was a better buy.

There's lots of small tie stubs which can be put under the unsupported areas as needed.  The panels were designed to be relatively easy to move so the locomotive can be shifted around to get into position.

I like that this unit has the old-style sheet metal. It helps pull it backwards into the pre-WWII era.

It's also pretty unique, which might help at least narrow down Ted's question of builder's info...

If other information scattered about the internet is to be  believed (  ::) ::) ), 15016 is certainly a possibility. A photo of ECSX 545 shows the same sheet metal and radial couplers.

URHS of NJ has a unit with the same sheet metal, c/n 12977, blt 12/40.

Let's not get too excited about paint schemes, etc. This project may take a couple or three or four years, AFTER we get the Wilmar tamper going satisfactorily. The hoods will be taken off for access to the engines, and there will be major surgery on the cab and the frame before we even think about painting.

Did you mean to put that on NGDF? That's where the painting conversation is. No one mentioned paint here.

Is the motor to be used from the locomotive going to be getting a full overhaul before it is installed. I would think we want every part of the loco refurbished to tolerances that will insure trouble free service. I know this a big project and will take time and money but we may as well get a trouble free product. I'm not saying you won't do a good job, I think a total tear down and inspection of everything is a must.
