I am impressed that Amanda can keep her tennis shoes so white around the railroad.

It was her first day 😁

Amanda found us as she needed to complete some volunteer time for a school requirement. We put her to work in the machine shop once we learned that she had some machining experience (and an interest in robotics.) She was overheard discussing the need for better footwear with Nicole - so she is aware of the hazards of wearing sneakers in the shop.

More importantly, she had a great volunteer experience with us, and she hopes to return back soon.

So, how did she hear about the museum?

We're listed on a couple of volunteer recruitment web sites:
https://www.volunteermatch.org/search/opp566215.jsp
https://volunteer.uwmcm.org/need/detail/?need_id=524764

Both Amanda and Nicole found us on VolunteerMatch. We get inquiries from one of these sites about once a month - but the applicants almost never actually come to volunteer.

There are other sites like this, and these listings could use some maintaining. If anyone (especially someone "from away") would like to take on this challenge, please let me know.

Work done on Saturday March 12:

* Machining for Locomotive 11.  Nicole was working on one of the castings
* Machining in general: Alan was making a mounting for the tracer attachment.
* Nancy cooked a big lunch.
* Board meeting.

Due to the bad weather, there wasn't much else going on.

Friday I removed the two cylinders that turn the boom back and forth on the backhoe and dropped them off at my cousins repair shop. The 4 hoses that go to them were also removed and will be replaced. This should be it for the backhoe for this winter other than minor repairs.

It would seem that these websites have the potential to attract younger volunteers whose primary interest may not initially be railroads. An influx of young volunteers is what will help ensure the continuation of our museum into the future.

Agree, assisting a project that is both engaging and of lasting value, that fits well with the environment, in company with like-minded people, is the attraction for all of us.

Work done on Saturday March 19:

* Dozer repair - Mike, assisted by myself and Cody, removed the rear "wheel" interiors (sorry, don't know the right term).  One was extremely worn.
* Loco 11 work - Gordon was machining a rear truck casting.
* Machine shop - Alan was working on the tracer attachment pedestal.  First time I saw the large machine between bays 2 and 3 working.
* Vacuum diaphragm testing - In the corner of the machine shop was an automatic vacuum diaphragm tester.  A little air compressor creating a vacuum and sucking up a weighted rod, at a certain height it flipped a switch and let the vacuum out (or rather let the air in) and let the rod dropped, until at a certain height it reflipped the switch to start the process over again.

* 24 40-lb bags of anthracite heating coal, donated to the museum, was picked up in Wiscasset then stacked on a pallet outside of the shop to be used for heating.

* Ed was seen mumbling at his computer inside the Percival house, supposedly trying to get sign ups for the SWW and various other upcoming train rides live on our ticketing system.

And in a first, Pete was not hovering somewhere in Cody’s proximity (hope Mike survived the day). Instead, I spent a few quiet hours above the shop counting out 30 each of back newsletter issues to save for the archives.
