The track spiking may not occur, even if the weather cooperates. Jason will update us.
Instead, an alternative (indoor) large/group work activity is being formulated. Details will follow.

Besides the "Halloween Train-and-Treat to SeaLyon Farm", a special "Ride the rails to hike the trails" guided hike with Midcoast Conservancy is planned - this will include a train to MP8 and a "Grand Opening" ceremony for the new trail system at Trout Brook Preserve.

All events are weather dependent; we will be deciding tonight how we proceed.

Work completed Tuesday and Wednesday 26-27 October 2021.

Tuesday:

*  Track work, Service track and track switch was relined, a broken rail replaced and a short
                         section of rail added to smooth out the curve and rolling of the rail, good results.
                         (Jason, Steve L, Steve Leet, Randy, Phil B)

*  Shop work,  Passenger truck rebuild continues  (Jerry, Carlos)
                         Bolster build  (Zack)
                         Vacuum brake work/design  (Jonathan)

*  Engine House,  Brendan

*  Archives  (Linda)
    Gift shop/mail  (Cindy R)

*  Coach #9 build continues  (Eric)


Wednesday:

*  Shop work,  Vacuum brake build  (Jonathan, Dave P)

*  Coach #9 build Roof work  (Eric, Ken A)

*  Yard switching  (Jason, Steve L)

*  Equipment shopping/tools/parts and pieces  (Brendan) 

*  Campus clean up, dump run (Stewart)

Note:  Track work and outside called off due to the storm.

Due to a variety of factors, not the least is the rain that dampened the prep work necessary, and the weather predicted for Saturday, we are postponing the track spiking session for the service track at Sheepscot until 11/13.

We are looking for ways to engage those volunteers who come on Saturday into existing projects.

Work done on Saturday October 30:

The day was drizzly for most of it, so not a lot of outdoor work.

* Engine house: The bay 2 back wall windows have to be moved, so the old windows were boarded up.
* Boxcar 67: Scraped by a new volunteer, and spots repainted.
* Boxcar 56: Marcel was putting in posts
* Coach 9: Zack was putting some finishing touches on one of the truck mounting points.
* Archives: Linda and Nicole were scanning photos and storing ephemera.
* New toy: our new-to-us forklift "Millie" arrive ("Millie" because it's ex-military).  1980s vintage!
* Well attended Halloween trips.  The 11 AM train was also to celebrate opening the Conservancy trail at Trout Brook.

The new forklift is at least 1980's vintage. The old forklift is from the 70's.

This is a serious-looking piece of equipment! Is it strictly a forklift or can it be fitted with a bucket? What happens to the old forklift?

If it's the same all-terrain fork that my ANG unit had, (which it appears to be) then it should be able to switch from forks to bucket quite easily.  We also had a specialized work platform that attached to the forks as well as a snowplow.  It was the favorite of my heavy equipment troops.

It is built as a forklift only. Brendan says the dump cylinder is shorter (makes it stronger) to lift heavy objects. Our current Forklift has been plagued with issues with no time to fix between uses. The old one will be fixed to run again then sold.

This will also help preserve the case loader. It has been used as a forklift too much recently and one of the recently repaired cylinders is leaking again.

I guess the original plans for building and maintaining the railroad as in days of old have given way to reality. I doubt the original railroad had forklifts, tampers, payloaders or any modern "toys". At least I've never seen photos of any. Also, didn't the original WW&F use gravel ballast? Again practicality has substituted stone ballast (I helped shovel off a few car loads at work weekends past).
  As for such things as event pavilions, you need to be careful not to turn the new WW&F into a theme park like the new Edaville USA. Or the water slide and other "amusement rides" such as at Clark's Trading Post. There's a great temptation to add more crowd pleasing "gee-gaws" to the place. Just saying. . .

That structure at Alna  is actually a corn 'Husking Shed' as you can see from this original photo:  ;D

Hi ALL, A reminder, many of our Saturday crew will be going to the Sandy River- Rangley Lakes Railroad this coming Saturday November 6th. It's our normal "help others"day. We will be putting track into the 2nd bay of their new car barn. 15 of us went up there last year and I hope we have the same again. Those of us that leave Sheepscot Station Sat. leave around 7:00 A.M.. From Farmington take Rt. 4 to Phillips, cross river and take sharp left. A small road along side of river.
