MANAGER NEEDED FOR ONGOING ISSUE...
« on: September 29, 2021, 09:02:42 AM »
Jason and I are hoping someone will come forward and tackle an ongoing need at Sheepscot. While this person would not necessarily need to be around every week, he/she would be responsible in seeing the task is attended to on all major operating days. This person would also work with the BOD and Superintendents to make and carry out necessary improvements. This is a leadership role.

Specifically, we need a Parking Manager.

This person (alone or with others) would ensure that the parking lot is attended on major operating days: set up/take down any temporary barricades, allow "all day" volunteers to be "boxed in" while those needing to leave early to have the freedom to do so, work with any construction crews on site to ensure their machinery and materials are not blocked (and to block machines that are not needed), etc.

More importantly, this person would recommend and execute any short or long term improvements. This could include signage, barricades, lining, etc.

Until we have more than sufficient parking in clearly defined spaces, this position is a must for our organization. Until now, a parking attendant (or two) has only been a last-minute nicety. With all the construction and lost spaces, it is a necessity for the safety and well-being of our visitors.

If you agree, please let me (or Jason) know. Even if you can't tackle the manager role, we still need helpers who will carry it out.

Managers are board appointed. Hoping one steps up before the next meeting so we can do so.

Thanks for the reminder though. I have ordered a chalk line marker to mark out the parking. It will be here next week hopefully, so we should be able to mark the spots or at least the dividing lines after that.

Parking lot looked good on Saturday with the chalk lines. I didn't see anyone on the road.

Yes, the chalk lines were a big improvement.  It helped that most volunteers for the work day parked up in the corner lot by 218.
What–me worry?

A big thank you to Mike Fox and Steve P. who helped make this happen.

The spacing between rows is too tight; this will be addressed. We also have new parking-specific cones on order. We also ALL must be vigilant about pulling all the way forward when parking adjacent to the Percival house. Otherwise, the grass grows and it doesn't look like usable parking.

And, of course, thanks to everyone who parked in the corner lot. This made it all work well - and (in part) allows us to comfortably release additional tickets for the next two weekends of pumpkin trains - resulting in about $1200 in additional revenue for the railroad.

That said, we still need someone who can manage the parking issue overall. We now have a reasonable solution that doesn't require someone to "man" it for every event. But the lines will need to be redone regularly, signage fixed/replaced, cones set up when necessary, etc.

Don't give me too much credit, you guys did the layout, I just followed what had been laid out. Also, removal of some items that happened last week, combined with a little more organizing Saturday resulted in about 4 or 5 more spots being created during the day. Every little bit helps.

I am pleased to report that this position has been filled.

Please join me in congratulating Bryce Weeks for stepping up to ensure that our parking lot is presentable each week when there is a large influx of passengers expected.

Meanwhile, just one more Saturday of volunteer parking in the field at 218/Cross Road. Thanks to all who are sacrificing their spaces at Sheepscot so that we can reduce the number of cars parked along Cross Road.

The last time I visited, Bryce informed me he was going to learn how to play the bagpipes. Will he be serenading the customers as he manages the parking lot? :o

No Jeff I will not, but my goal is to make parking a lot simpler, clearer, and more efficient than it is now. I know I have a lot to do to get it in shape, along with my other projects, but I know I can do it and it'll all be worth it! Hopefully there will be some change so everything is going to be set up a bit better, and not really "willy nilly" for a lack of better term.

I see opportunities here!  ;D
The WW&F could offer "Valet Parking"!!!  8)
(with some 'filthy lucre' changing hands of course)!  :o

Another revenue stream!!! Yay!  (Or a reward for a tough job.) :-X
Bagpipe serenade costs extra of course!  :P

I suspect a "bagpipe serenade" would get us in trouble with SPCAA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Anyone in the Area).
