Happy about learning of the weather improvement over the day. Nothing like a pouring rain to ruin any outdoors event. I still remember the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the AMTP in June 2016 when everyboby was drenched to the skin.

Work done on Saturday October 16:

* Engine house: More boards went up, some on the main west wall and some on the middle bay west wall.
* Garage: Mike did some re-arranging of the first bay of the garage to accept a "new" tractor (see the story at https://www.wiscassetnewspaper.com/article/alna-spend-close-half-million-cross-road-if-voters-approve/152939 for further details, middle of the article), and worked on some vehicle repairs.
* Boxcar 56: Marcel was working on it.
* Coach 9: Zack was working on assembling a core piece of one of the trucks, a wood-steel sandwich with new wood.
* Board meeting at 4.

That tractor is as old as I am.

If the town is going to redo Cross road - this would be the time to put the grade crossing in - to include a second track for the runaround.  There is usually grant money for grade crossing work through the state DOT and it might help costs associated with the Cross road rebuild.  Signal equipment could probably be reused from the several OOS branch lines in the state.

Question - If the crossings were put in, but not connected to the mainline, would the museum still come under FRA regulations?

We have had official conversations with the FRA and they have made it clear that what they value most is a close, honest relationship and that they be part of the process.  There will be significant transitional concerns to our entire organization- both the FRA and our managers want to see that transition occur smoothly, over time, in advance of actually coming under their jurisdiction.  Dropping a crossing in- whether connected or not- would need to be presented to the FRA as a concept- and their endorsement sought- in order to honor the spirit of our discussions with them to date.

Let’s not forget there are other relevant entities to include in such planning including the W&Q, the town, the state. Finally- as soon as the road is crossed we are facing another round of significant environmental permits.

Right now we are working hard to normalize and systemize the routine maintenance of our growing physical plant (equipment, buildings, track, etc) and attain a level of sustainability regarding the balance of operating expenses to operating income.  We want to keep moving forward with our FRA relationship, and “down payments” on future potential expansion- however that needs to be concurrent with this idea of normalizing the sustainability of our operation.

Thanks,
Jason

Anticipated work for Tuesday and Wednesday 19-20 October 2021

*  Track work, prep for tamper work (Tues), tamper work on main line (Wed), complete work on house track switch, select/load rail for same (pending)
*  Shop work, passenger car truck rebuild, vacuum brakes
*  Tuesday morning school charter
*  Engine house build continues
*  Campus clean up

Note:  Blaze orange doesn’t just mean Halloween, deer season is under way. It’s always a
           good idea to wear orange when working on track and walking the main line.

This afternoon I drove over to the Museum to pick up the volunteer log for another round of data entry.  When I pulled in, Dave and others were admiring the "new" tractor.  Someone wanted to get pictures of it for the paper, so they started it and drove it around the parking lot.  It runs better than some of our other equipment!  It's also smaller than the picture in the news led me to believe, about the size of the Mitsubishi.

That Ford is a nice machine. Small, yes, but tough as nails. As James observed, "it just wants to run." Basically an 8N with overhead valves and live hydraulics. Would sure look nice pulling the hay wagons at Sea Lyon...somehow a Kubota with a bucket doesn't quite do it for me.

My father grew up on a farm and had an 8N. It was a tough little tractor.

I have a 1954 Ford NAA and it is rugged and dependable. I’ve used it haying and logging and it is still going strong. Don’t abuse it and it will be with us for a long time.

I know one young member who, when he's tall enough, will be mighty keen to drive that Ford tractor. Incidentally, if anyone has gotten a photo of us on Fred's mower, would you send a copy to me?

If you happen to see Cody around lunch time this Saturday, he'll have just met his goal of 150 hours of volunteer service since we started tracking it in April. We headed home last Saturday sitting at 147 hours. He's fairly chuffed about this accomplishment.

Help Needed for Sat. 10/23:
We're looking for someone who can serve as "Agent" at Top of Mountain on Saturday. This person would stay at ToM between trains to assist passengers coming to/from SeaLyon Farm, guard the railroad crossing during the run-around, and answer questions about the railway and the event. Ideally, this person would also be qualified to give handcar rides (or at least be able to assist with them.)

Linda had done this with great success for two weeks - bringing with her a book of WW&F photos to show off. However, is no longer able to do that (for now.) Last week, her absence was visibly noticeable, with chaos among our visitors.

Let me know if you are interested in helping in this manner.
