LGB/Marklin Releases Model of #9
« on: September 15, 2021, 09:49:24 PM »
We're pleased to announce that LGB/Marklin has produced a licensed model of WW&F #9:
https://www.maerklinshop.de/en/detail/index/sArticle/63006

Note that while we were consulted, there are some fairly major differences between the prototype and the model (at least as pictured) that the designers did not address when retooling their existing Forney model.

However, by special agreement with LGB, every model sold will include a small book about the history of the WW&F and its current mission. As such, this will serve as a great ambassador to our museum to garden railway enthusiasts around the world.

Matching models of coaches 3 & 8 are also available. Apparently they too have chosen to paint coach 3 as "Wiscasset and Quebec"!

I'm hoping for a 3-rail O scale version, myself. But I'm weird like that.

The "desert Southwest" is an interesting backdrop choice... Pretty neat!

I guess this means coach 8 should be turned into a clerestory car.

I just also noticed the outside frames on 9!

Seriously though, for all the nit-picking, these are some great little pieces.

A careful application of a razor blade can turn that 8 into a (almost) 9 really quick.

It was suggested that if they were to do two clerestory coaches, they should be numbered 2 & 3 (or 3 & 9.) Or at least make coach 8 a combination car (which they had the tooling for.)

It was indicated that if this sells well, they may be open to doing other WW&F-based models. We'll see...

Well, I am doing my part and have already ordered my set thru my local hobby shop.

They may become a little less expensive on line but I like to support my local guy.

The coaches look "short" to me. I guess one could buy a couple and resection to get a scale length car.  As someone mentioned, the cab roof of the locomotive is not correct. It would take a bit more modeling skill to correct that.  The outside frame is wrong too, as someone else pointed out. All in all, from what I see so far, I rate this a C+. Nice try but no cigar!

As a longtime large scale model railroader I am very familiar with LGB.  This company has always been known for strong, rugged and well engineered models.
High scale fidelity, NOT SO MUCH.  But the general garden railroad market didn't demand a high degree of scale so rugged stand-off replicas were just fine.
Also, LGB trains are engineered to operate on VERY sharp curves, so the shorter coaches.
My scale buddies and I considered LGB as a starting point for conversation to higher scale standards.

While it is nice they are making this and will help publicize the railroad the fact is it is being made in large scale based on holds they already have.  The G scale producers unlike rest of the scales slap a new paint job on something weather the design is correct or not because they will not spend the money to correct molds or make new parts.

Since Marklin acquired LGB all they have been doing is running the existing molds and have not seen anything really new.

unlike rest of the scales

There's plenty of blame to go around. I have a Minitrix (N scale) PRR Decapod which is in fact their German-pattern 2-10-0 chassis, with a K4 boiler shell slapped on. The cylinders on the shell don't even line up with the side rods.

And then they took the same physical loco and painted it for AT&SF as well.

My set arrived today.

If you had told the "boy" Edgar Lecuyer back in 1982 that someday he would be Trainmaster at a railroad and would own an LGB-produced model of that very train set, he would have probably thought you were crazy, but here we are.

As agreed, the locomotive model does include the WW&F history book. It does not appear the production model differs significantly from the prototype pictured in the advertising.

Is it a perfect model of #9 - no, far from it. But it is perfect enough for me (and the boy within, who sometimes still likes to play with trains.)
