Cody and I plan to be there on Saturday. Just to be certain, Trout Brook volunteers are not arriving via train, correct?

Hi Pete, I just checked the Crew Calendar and Saturdays train to Trout Brook has been ANNULLED.

Dwight is correct. There will be no work train from Sheepscot to Trout Brook on Saturday. Volunteers should carpool from Sheepscot, or meet us at Trout Brook Preserve around 9:00am.

Work done on Saturday June 12:

* Trout Brook Trail Day: a fair sized crew blazed a new trail at the Midcoast Conservancy, and relocated an old trail (off our track).
* Sheepscot Section house: Stewart (and later Dana) were busy shingling.
* Machine shop: Nicole was emery clothing the journals on the new axles.  Alan oversaw the turning of the flanging machine around 120 degrees.
* Other work: Nicole and Cody were cleaning out the coaches.  Fred did some mowing.  Mike did some earth moving in the afternoon.

Add to today's accomplishments: Cody hauled away 20 buckets of cinders from the ash pit at Sheepscot Station.

Sunday, the equipment was moved north from AC. I removed a few stumps in the Yard Limit on the East side, smoothing up the area so it can be mowed with a bush hog.





Next weeked will be headed towards Albees Field.

Thanks Mike.  The use of a bush hog will make a big difference maintaining the active right-of-way.  I've noticed this spring lots of saplings and brush well along in various spots like the grade between Brook and Sutter's crossings and around milepost 7.  We could keep up with it in the past, but the days of ground crews with blade trimmers and chainsaws doing this has passed.  Growing pains, I'd say.  Our active railway is 2.5 miles long now, and the 3/4-mile Mountain Extension will open soon.

 I know what a bush and a hog are but I can't picture  what  a bush hog is. Could you put me in the picture with a picture.

Alain,   I always called it a brush hog.  anyhow, it is a tractor pulled rotary mower.

Thank you Tom. I can picture it by now. I often meet them mowing the backsides of the road. I do prefer meeting them to bumping into a wild one rushing out of the bush right in front of my car when I drive through the Orleans forest. In the Département du Loiret where I live, the rotary mower is mostly fixed on a John Deer tractor like Fred's one that could be loaded on a flatcar for that purpose.

There is an agricultural equipment manufacturer that has been making tractor powered "rotary cutters" for 70 years. The company name is "Bush Hog", and "bush hog" and "brush hog" and PTO driven rotary cutter have evolved to all have a similar meaning in the USA.

A "brush hog" is typically recognized to handle rougher terrain than a similar tractor PTO driven "finish mower".
