A little long James? I was very thankful you guys did not want to bump it to 4 for me like I asked..

Anyhow, it is not very often I am accused of cutting corners, but today it was true. We cut the very tip top of the TOM area. As James said, this opens up a whole area for our photographers. And here we go with the photos..

Before

After

Before (look for Jerry in the trees)

After, Jerry in about the same spot.

And now to fill in the day.

A smokey start for Brian, Jerry and I.

Trying to catch Brian cutting the tree down with Jerry pushing as James looks on, but as you can see I was a little slow (actually Brian is that quick)

Only 1 fire today..

Looking North at the improved view.

Train time..

Brian taking a rare break..

Letting things wind down, Dave (seated) Brian and Jerry watch the fire.

And another look North after we were done (just a few more trees Jerry)

Standing on the steel culvert looking south

They are calling for snow this week, so we will wait and see what it does. A few inches will be ok for Saturday, a foot may be tough going..

Sure tha'll be a great place to take photos and to shot videos given it just overlooks the steepest grade of the main if I'm not mistaken.

I'll be working on equipment in the shop for a few weekends, including this Saturday. This will include some cleaning, paint stripping, and repainting of the radial arm drill. If we have newer volunteers looking for a project to land on (especially after Steam and Saws wraps up) I'll be able to use a couple of folks. I'm going to try and save the more general work for days when I have some help to try and create that opening.

On Wednesday, Jason and I went to Mountain Machine Works in Auburn to pick up our 10 new axles. Mountain Machine donated half the value of the fully machined axles which was a tremendous donation of value, and also saved us a huge amount of labor due to their CNC production methods. We brought a letter signed by Dave and presented it to the owner who plans to come out to the railroad for a visit in the future. For now, the axles are in my garage on my trailer. I'll be bringing them to the museum on a dry day so we can stash them away. The mating 20 new wheels will be delivered this coming week, and the 10 wheelsets will facilitate boxcar 56's re-wheeling, coach 9's new trucks, and add two spares into the operations department pool for swap out when maintenance concerns arise. #11 will be getting larger diameter axles and so it's wheels will be ordered late this year, or early next.

Partial report for 2/20:

* Top of Mountain cutting: 3 saws going, maybe 8 people there?  We were cutting south of the spur track.  Pretty thick in there so we did a lot of cutting but didn't seem like we got far.
* Things were happening with boxcar 56 and the machine shop, but I didn't visit the shop after I came back to SS for lunch.\
* Steam & Sleighs: parking lot was full.

We got a lot done but did not cover much area. Lots of trees... And I forgot some before pics, so look back to last weeks photos and maybe it is in the background..

First picture I took.. Fred wanted to cut a tree down.

Then Brian picks up around the other pile, shortly after Jerry and I restocked the pile in front. Will get real hot in a second.

Then I walked to the PPB (Porcupine Palace Boulevard) and took these next shots, starting south where we were cutting today

Brian brought his pole saw and cut the limbs that were obstructing the view down the mountain. This will be a great photo/video location as a train works up the steepest part of the Mountain. We have got a little clean up to do getting some large pines that fell out of view. Kubota work I think..

Looking south at what we cut last weekend, with the limbs removed it really opens it up.

One of the trees laying on the right I want to clean up.

And Jerry suggested that I take a before picture of next weeks work. So here it is..

I want to cut at least one more day up there so come join while you can.

I miss talking with Fred, you, Dave and many other friends in person in Maine.  Better times are coming soon.  Great photos as always, Mike.  Thanks for sharing.
What–me worry?
