Case Loader
« on: January 29, 2021, 05:48:27 PM »
Repairs have been ongoing since last spring to the loader. It started with a broken fuel injector line, then it was decided to do the brakes. It was torn down rather quickly in June or July, and has sat waiting for parts then work to be completed.

Since I did not take it apart, I really did not want to put it together, but wanted it done. So, I have tried to work on it when I could, today being a great day to do so because no one was there to talk with or help with other projects.

Last week, I completed the front end. Notice the space heater. It was only about 10 degrees and this ran for a few hours to get the chill off.

The back end looked like this at the start.

Knuckle installed, then the backing plate, and the relined brakes.

Bearing assembly.

The nut has a roll pin that goes blindly into the hole on the back of the outer ring of the planetary.

No go..

Got it..

Tire is on to get the proper torque on the bearings. Supposed to be 13 foot pounds, but I converted it to inch to get a more accurate setting.

All that is left is to fill the rear end with oil, bleed the brakes, install a new tie rod end if I can get one, and put on the tires.

Is insulating the garage a suitable next project?

Mike, please re-orient us ignoramuses as to what the space loader is and how it fits in with the rest of the maintenance equipment...

I know it's important but I've lost track.

Thanks

A big improvement, Mike. How are things coming with Fred's tractor?

The Case loader is excellent for getting loads of stone for the flatcars, much better than the John Deere tractor can handle it.

The John Deere is almost back together. I looked at it today and it is close. Lots of little parts left to go. Brendan had to leave for a few days, and when he returns he should be able to finish easily.

The loader also has a set of forks with it so it can be used in a variety of ways. We purchased it from Copeland Lumber a couple of years ago. One of the bigger jobs it has done so far is I used it to lug 27 or 28 bucket loads of material over the bridge in 2019 to fill the last remaining hole on the mountain. Brendan used it in the spring of that year to lug material away from the Car Barn Extension as he prepped the area to build the pad for the extension.

The loader is in the shop for radiator and hydraulic cylinder repair. Also removed a few hoses to get new ones made.
