Maine 2' Flatcar Blueprints
« on: January 19, 2021, 08:19:32 PM »
Hey all,
I've fallen back down the model railroading black hole.  Does anyone know where i can find blueprints of the WW&F flatcars?  Mainly i am looking for the sill dimensions and placement.
thank you

I remember seeing an article in Model Railroader or Railroad Model Craftsman on "How to Build a Maine 2-ft Flatcar". Of course I don't have a copy of it, or recall any of the details. Maybe someone will know...

We also may have a copy of the article in the WW&F Archives.

I believe there are drawings with dimensions in "Two Feet to Tidewater," aren't there?

I scratchbuilt several On2 Flatcars and used:
- 6" x 12" for the Center and Intermediate Sills, an
- 9" x 12" for the Outer Sills and End Sills.
I also have a drawing of the Sill placement, if I can find it . . . .

Dave I forgot about those.

Without reading- is the material for the Box Car undercarriage more correct for a standard Flat?

Doesn't the museum have a number of plans from the Portland Co.?

Yes, but I believe the plans the museum has are copies of the originals at the Maine Archives.  You can order copies for yourself.

Bob Jones' book had material lists for some of the various freight car orders W&Q/WW&F purchase from Portland Co.  The material lists do show the dimensions of the center, intermediate, and outer sills as well as dimensions for the end beams; in fact, all the dimensions for every stick of wood on the cars.  There are also dimensions for the various bits of steel, wrought iron, and cast iron, too.
