Cheap Places to Stay near Sheepscot
« on: January 05, 2009, 08:06:42 PM »
If someone came to help out, what places are there to stay that are free/cheap? What would be an interesting place to have too is a small bunk house or barracks done up in period fashion, rough wood bunks and all with the obligatory wood stove.

What's been known to happen is people have come and stayed in the station buildings, caboose, or even camped out in a tent.  With the house, there's now a place where you can get a hot shower, as long as you clean up after yourself.  We are looking into policies into letting people bunk in the house (we haven't wanted to do it in the past because of property tax/business use).

For the 2007 fall track work weekend we stayed at the Chewonki campground. Its $15 a night, and the sites are absolutely perfect. Unfortunatly, there was a bad rainstorm that weekend. My son has got me into trains, he helped at the 2007 fall work weekend  even though he had a walking cast on. He really likes history and trains.

Last weekend I stayed at the Schooner Inn: http://www.schoonerinnme.com/ at the suggestion of one of our fellow forum participants. If you say that you are with the WW&F, and in the off-season, it was only $45 - which is more than reasonable.

In the summer, I would expect that the price would be at least twice that.

Many members stay at Wiscasset Motor Lodge: http://www.wiscassetmotorlodge.com/ -again, they have been known to discount WW&F members. They are closed for the winter right now.

Are there any campgrounds north of Wiscasset?

How about camping out at Alna Center because there are lots of open space there to watch the WW&F trains go by and have a good open space to share with other campers!   :D ;D

I don't think the museum owns much of that open space at Alna Center.

Plus, it's kind of melodramatic for the regular visitors to the WW&F to travel to Alna center, only to be greeted by a modern campsite and related vehicles.

The one time I camped at Sheepscot I purposefully tried to keep my tent out of view - so not to "spoil" the scenery.

I can recommend the Pioneer Motel in North Edgecomb on Route 1.
$40/ night.

And if you don't feel like "roughing it," there's always the Sheepscot Harbour Village & Resort... http://www.midcoastresort.com/
I like to stay there when I'm in need of a massage, pedicure and Bintliff's gourmet cuisine... via room service of course ;)

My wife and I also stayed at the Sheescot Harbor Village and Resort in '06 for Victorian Christmas.  We  found the place very nice and not overly pricey for December.

This is the most useful thread I've ever seen on the forum. Now, what are the various methods of getting to Sheepscot? Can you take a train?

Yes, from Alna Center. Service every weekend.  ;)

Amtrak will get you as far as Portland. After that you need to get a bus and/or rental car.

Even if you get a bus, you can still go only as far as Wiscasset or Damariscotta before de-bussing and either walking (looong walk) or hitching a ride.
