Tool Car - Doesn't that mean a collection of tools likely to be needed when working along the right of way?
Not a place in which to store tools in general. If all of the tools end up there, they will never be available or accessible when and where needed.
It should be only for a SELECTION of those items that are routinely put on a train in order to do work along the right of way.
Otherwise this car will get filled up with (fill in the blank!)

As I figured it the outfitting and use of 56 as a tool car will fall under the Roadmaster, Steve Lennox’s purview.

Thanks,
Jason

Why not just paint a red stripe on the handles for any tool to be returned to the tool car.  A blue stripe for a tool shed.  A green stripe for the shop, ect.  You could even just use a good sticky tape.

He is going to cut out the windows later.

Which was done when it was on the B&SR.

Absolutely Guaranteed!!!  Perhaps we should make an inventory list of where tools are located:  toolcar, track house, other location.  That way when we need a tool, we can at least know where to start looking for where the tool WAS located at some previous time.

This would be an aside task to occasionally park the tool car by the track house and relocate tools to their supposed to be proper location.

While it's a good idea, an inventory list would work only if tools get returned to the proper location. Past history indicates that it doesn't necessarily happen. And when that happens, the scavenger hunt is on.

AND, Wayne, the tool you need will be guaranteed to be at the other end of the line, even if you have the toolcar with you.

Just need twice the amount of tools..

I thought the intent of the tool car was to be able to secure tools on a jobsite or over a work weekend without having to haul everything back to Sheepscot.

I do like Erics idea though. Color coding the tools. After a big weekend the tool house tools could be returned, while the tool car tools stay in the car.

Agreed Bill/Mike,   Eric has a very good idea and color coding will make sorting a whole lot easier than trying to figure out which tool list it's on.

I think a really good start would be to develop a master list of those "ideal basic" tools that should be always on 56.

This could be both a fun exercise for many to provide input, and a critical step in designing the interior of the tool car.

Of course it will never be perfect, but could always serve as a baseline for keeping the car properly equipped during ongoing operations.

Just a thought and a challenge.

Carrying the color coding a step further, how about two stripes on each tool. The general algorithm would be any tool with two colored stripes is a tool car tool.  Further, there would be 25 assigned locations within the tool car:
Location #1: Blue with white
Location #2: Orange with white
Location #3: Green with white
Location #4: Brown with white
Location #5: Slate (gray) with white
Location #6: Blue with red
Location #7: Orange with red
Fred, Stewart, and Brendan will know where I'm going with this. ::)

If you run a cord from the boxcar to the locomotive bell, you could it a bell system color code. Don't get steamed up because I said that John!

John,

At least you are sticking with only the 25-type color code!

There has been the idea of a tool car in the past, the more recent idea came from Mark and I. The car wasn’t suppose to be designed from a previous type car. We thought a simple flat car, one half boxed in  for tools, the other half flat for materials. The materials being ballast, ties etc, making it easier to load and unload the same. The tool portion would be the typical track tools needed to equip a 5 to 7 person track crew so they could simply couple up and leave Sheepscot station in a some what time saving fashion. There would still be the choice specialty tools or materials that would/will be loaded day of departure. The focus was on “Track Maintenance” and not necessarily the larger work weekends, but it would work great for the designated work Saturdays that we have been doing lately, specially if the crew chiefs had special needs and could let us know so we could load it in advance.
Everybody has great ideas for this car from tools to work benches, shelving even battery lighting, fold up bench seating. The idea of marked tools just for the tool car is a great idea except, at the end of the day, volunteers more often than not leave their tools where they lay not where they came from. This car has a variety of potentials but maybe we should start small and basic then work our way up. The box car rebuild and to use it as a tool car is a great idea, Marcel is doing a terrific job and when completed will be much appreciated.

Hey while you 're at it don't forget to save room and find a color code for an essential tool in #56,  a few bottles of Moxie that  will surely back up a lot the trackcrew  In Pithiviers back in the day I must admit that  there was always a real mess in the trackwork boxcar but we always found a fresh and safe place to keep a few bottles of beer or wine to support the spirits, no pun intended, of the track crew. Nowadays the MTP boxcar is still a mess but soft drinks have taken over and it's just as well.
