2019 Volunteer Hours
« on: July 07, 2020, 08:30:07 AM »
The State of Maine has published their list of 2019 Volunteer hours, for those of us who live within it's borders, or, as one I have noticed, volunteered in a specific town, even though the volunteer hails from out of state.. It is broken down by Maine towns, in alphabetical order. It should be no suprise who is on the list, as there are several of us there every Saturday, as well as putting time in during the week either on site or remotely.

This page should be free to view, but they do have an article limit, so if you view any other stories, you may not get the whole list.

Out of curiosity, why were the 2018 volunteers not recognized? By either the museum or the state?

Because I missed the deadline by 2 days.

The fact that I got this year's in is thanks to Dan's grandmother Joan.  She let me know of the extended deadline.

Thanks to the efforts of James and long-time editor John McNamara, we have listed our past year's volunteers annually in our Newsletter for a number of years.  This tradition continued acknowledging our 2018 volunteers in the May/June 2019 issue and our 2019 volunteers in the May/June 2020 issue.  This admittedly is a small token recognizing how much everyone has advanced our railway over the years.  I for one greatly appreciate all the effort James puts in to compile this list annually, on top of all the other administrative work he performs for our Museum, year in, year out.

Maine's program to acknowledge 500-hour volunteers is brilliant, and I'm glad we're now part of it.  Since the July/August Newsletter was "put to bed" a couple of days ago, I apologize we can't acknowledge our 2019 500-hour volunteers until the September/October issue.
What–me worry?

Oh. No worries. I was just curious is all. I can only imagine how much of a tedious process it must be to keep track of everyones hours.

VERY tedious.  In fact, if someone would like to take it over, I would be glad to be free of it.

Is Volunteer Hours Tracking part of some larger program (like Member Management software), or is Hours Tracking some sort of stand-alone software (perhaps a spreadsheet?)?

But that's how your name gets on the list in the first place  ;)

Graham, James hand enters the hours into a program, from our log book at the museum or off site hours sent to him.

I built a program years ago where I enter the hours from the book, which I take home from time to time to enter from home.  I then press a button and it spits out the report of volunteers and their hours.  So the final output is easy, but the entering is a grind.

Every year I check the internet for an easier way.  Everything out there either a) costs money, or b) doesn't do what I want.
