B&SR no. 8 arrives at Sheepscot
« on: December 12, 2019, 06:40:33 PM »
B&SR no. 8 arrived at Sheepscot this afternoon from the Maine Narrow Gauge Museum in Portland. No. 8 will be put on outside display on one the future roundhouse tracks off of the turntable. The locomotive needs a new boiler and MNGRR has no current plans to restore the locomotive to operating condition.

No. 8 being loaded up in Portland. The stack is off for vertical clearance. Wes Heinz photos.

Arriving at Sheepscot and being unloaded on the ramp track.

Parked inside bay 3 of the shop. A crew from MNGRR is cleaning the engine and touching up the paint before the locomotive goes outside on display tomorrow.

How are the headlights and mark the lamps while it was in the shop? That would be a neat affect for when we have nighttime trains.

The lights have 120v bulbs installed and are wired to a standard plug. Wes just plugged the engine into an extension cord to light it up.

I'll bet it's been a while since the old girl last saw the sunshine.   I remember Russ Page giving me a cab ride in this engine way back in the early 2000s.    The king of the Maine 2-footers.   Should be quite a display for VC.    Wish it weren't going to rain.  :(

The photos of No. 8 on the ramp track and in the shop show just how big she really is. Wow is the word.

I had a cab ride in No. 8 at Edaville back in the 1980s and have a great fondness for the engine. I'm glad we can offer her a new home for a while.

(Do I understand correctly that in addition to the boiler problems she also has a cracked cylinder?)

Yep, a big little narrow gauger.
Any idea if and when 8 gets rebuilt?

Thanks for the pics, including a peek at the completed trusses and wall framing of the car barn extension.

There are no plans for Maine Narrow Gauge to rebuild #8 at this time. They are focused on Depot and Shop construction.

It seems that whenever #8 is being transported between sites, it's stack is always removed. When I saw it in the documentary about the equipment going up to the MNGRR, I thought they just took the stack off because it was a diamond stack

The stack comes off because otherwise it's an overheight load on the trailer.

38 tons.  Rather impressive.  That is just about what J&L 58 weighs now, but 8 has three more axles to spread out the weight!

The track department would not be impressed if 58 shined our light rail..

Things are going well on the J&LNG.  Last weekend we acquired an 8,000 gallon GATX tankcar tank, built in 1920, to use as a new water tower.  We are also ready to pull up some 115 lb. rail to use for future track construction.  58 is slumbering, waiting patiently for spring.
