New west parking lot
« on: August 31, 2019, 08:57:02 PM »
Last year the museum made a commitment to the town to expand our parking lot. Last fall during the work weekend we had the use of an excavator from Chesterfield Associates and Dean with his Bobcat to clear the parking lot area.  Last week our local contractor Jeff Verney put in some drainage ditches and started hauling in tailings for the base of the parking lot. Jeff will cover the tailings with  crushed bank gravel for the lot surface.

Clearing during the fall 2018 work weekend.

Jeff working on the parking lot last week. When I left Thursday afternoon Jeff had the base layer of the parking lot almost done out to the existing lot.

Wowie Dowie, that is a lot of progress.  Well Done Dean and Jeff.

I can't remember from earlier posts: Is it the museum's intention that the new section of the parking lot will have entrance(s) directly from Cross Road?

We did not present it to the town that we were going to have an entrance to Cross Rd.

It has been graded so we could add one easily, as soon as the BOD discusses the change, and the modification does not adversly affect our submitted plan with the town. We already have the ok from the road commisioner.

You guys whipping out the new lot are, without a doubt, Super Magicians of Dirt!!!
I would think the town council and police would welcome a way to cut down on WW&F  event parking and pedestrians along narrow, two-lane Cross Road.

Saturday night at the BOD meeting we had a discussion about an entrance to Cross Rd. We decided to lett Contractor Jeff install the entrance, and we would gate it off, opening only when the higher volume days like special events or work weekends. This will help ease traffic flow during these times.

Sounds like the best idea, Mike. As I mentioned, extra traffic can then park off narrow, two-lane Cross Road, minimizing roadway pedestrians, particularly after sunset.

Pictures taken last week. The new lot should be done by work weekend.

New entrance from Cross Rd.

Entrance from the back west side of the existing parking lot.

Looking from the south east corner to the north west corner of the new lot.

Will the new lot be ready for use by the Work Weekend? If so, perhaps volunteers could be encouraged to park there rather than in the east lot, saving it for use by visitors.

You may want to use marker paint and indicate where the entrance to the new lot is located from the
old lot - so visitors don't block access. "Fire Lane" - "Additional Parking" or some such.

The new West lot is already in use.  A few of us parked there last weekend.

Definitely need signage and other guidance for FWW.  During Fall Festival, the entrance to the west parking lot was partially blocked.

In the long run, need permanent signage and entrance/lane control.

If someone wants to volunteer to be parking attendant during Sat and/or Sun of FWW - please let us know! We could easily use 2-3 people each day in that role, especially from 7am to 10:30am.

Ed:   I will help with the parking.  Experience tells me we will need at minimum 2 others.  Need to have volunteers park in the West lot, public in the main lot.
