August 2019 Work Planning

I went over after I returned south with the intention of taking a picture of it, but talked with Zack, then Bob, then Bob some more, and soon forgot about the picture..

Anticipated work for weekend of Aug 24:

* Mountain Extension: Mike is diggin' it.
* Car barn extension
* B&SR 14 disassembly
* FWW prep
* Concert Saturday evening.

Work on Saturday Aug 24:

* Mountain Extension: Brendan drove the "new" front end loader to the north end, and I presume that Mike used it to haul material during the day.  Mike will have to report further on his endeavors.
* Car barn Extension: Brendan was removing some boards from the southeast wall.  I saw string lines in the air and spray paint on the ground, so hopefully that means it's close to concrete.
* B&SR 14: The car is totally disassembled, Zack was working on the tension rods today.
* Concert prep: Chairs were brought up in the Model AA, which then became the stage for tonight.

In other news: rails have been sorted and stacked in preparation for FWW.  There's still 1.5 layers on the big rail pile.  Jeff Verney has been grading and ditching  the west parking lot.

70+ passengers on today's steam and rail car trains, not including the 5 p.m. concert train.  Car host Dick Picard and I enjoyed talking with several families and other guests.  Not super sunny, but it was a spectacular day in terms of temperature and humidity.  We had some terrific passengers today -- great conversations.

Ed greeted passengers before and after the train trip, encouraging all to join him on hand car rides in the yard.  Many took up the offer.

Dave, friend Fred Merrill and I walked a short tour from Route 218 to the bridge and shortly beyond in the morning and saw Mike bringing the first load of gravel south over the bridge with the front end loader.  Mike had the front loader round trips timed by lunch.

Oh -- forgot to mention John McNamara took the 3 p.m. trip up to Rosewood to mark out the location of a replacement magneto phone line at the crossing.  I asked engineer James to stop at Rosewood on our 3.30 p.m. trip back from Top of Mountain to pick up John or at least wave at John as we passed by.  James graciously stopped.

I understand John was on the concert train crew.

Anticipated work for Saturday Aug 31

* Car barn extension
* B&SR Flatcar 14
* Ice cream social in the afternoon - we're running a full sized second class train
* Paint the underside of the trailer.

If someone is looking for something to do, there is the bottom side of the big trailer to paint. Brendan is waiting to reassemble it after it gets done. But we will need it soon so if it is going to get done it should be soon. A quick scrape and paint would be better than nothing. School Bus Yellow, and am pretty sure we don't have the paint on site, but can be found at Tractor Supply of maybe even Ames in Wiscasset.

The paint for the trailer is in the garage by the bench. There is a gallon of primer and two gallons of cat yellow.

Work done on Saturday Aug 31:

* Ice cream social: An early train went up with the freezer while the rest of the equipment went up on an antique truck.  A number of people were on hand to help with the ice cream.  The first class trains were well patronized.
* Magphone: Fred and John spent some time working on the magphone around Rosewood.  At some point I heard a mag jingle when no train was scheduled to make one, so hopefully that bodes well for the line.

Got rid of the rest of the leftover junk from the yard sale. Then got a new battery for the blue tractor. Helped put wood spacers against the rail for the flange ways when the cement is being poured. Picked up a roll of duck tape on the way home for Brendan. Jeff Verney is working at the bridge site this week. He has a lot to do there before he come back to the new parking lot.

Speaking of Da Bridge......

Will the temporary, transverse support beams that held the temp steel spans be removed?
When will the truss walls 'outrigger' braces be boxed in?
Those unpainted, bridge  base corner supports look oddly unfinished.

Also Fred...placing flangeway blockouts  must mean the car barn extension slab pour is underway?
 A pic or two would be fab.
