Car Barn Extension - Official Work Thread
« on: July 11, 2019, 03:48:24 PM »
Car barn extension progress. All the excavation for the new drainage and the building pad is done. The back wall is removed from the building and track panels for the extension were built this week. The next step is setting the track panels in place and finishing up the gravel pad.

Brendan, a really good start to a much needed new thread.  This project is "huge" in terms of the MNG collaboration and the future of both museums.  I'm sure everyone on the Forum will want to have regular updates -- and the photographic record is equally important.

Many thanks for kicking this off, and keep us all updated with new photos.

Bob

Brendan; I'll echo Bob's comment thanking you for starting this thread. I'm also sure this will be a popular thread on the Forum given the significance of having the MNG collection at Alna. Look forward to future updates.

Any idea when the concrete floor will be poured for the extension?

Do we have all the design documents & permits needed to proceed with the extension?  Is going to become a major project for the FWW crews?

Sorry Jeff, I am not sure why no one has answered you.

The rails need to be completed first. They have been made, and last time I was there one was sitting near where it should go. Once the rails are in, the concrete contractor will be contacted, and we will be put on his schedule.

As for FWW, I think the building should be mostly complete. The mud this spring got them behind a little, and now the moving of the MNG cars has slowed forward progress, or at least none has been reported.

Been busy hauling things from Portland, From 8AM to 1030PM at night. Got to be able to think when doing the car barn. I'm sure we will get to it soon. As my grammy used to say, there's only so many hours in a day.

A couple of photos from yesterday.

Brendan was busy compacting the base for the car barn extension as Dean Copeland brings over more gravel in his mini excavator.

A sign for the public explaining all the work on the car barn.
What–me worry?

Small excavators/ powered equipment are SO handy.
On a big Abq main sewer job years ago, we used those push compactors, called them "turtles".

BTW, what is that machine in the car barn with the big red flywheels?

It's a steam engine that arrived on site quite a number of years ago, potentially to be used on the saw mill.

Will the concrete floor be done in two pours? One for the South extension and the second for the East side. Also any estimate as to when the floor in the existing car barn will be done?

I would think the separate floors will be done as two projects?
And the existing inerior floor will be covered with crushed/rolled asphalt?
