Car Barn Extension - Official Work Thread

The northward length of the "bump-out" was curtailed (for now) until funding becomes available for that extension.

There have been a few new ideas tossed around that could include adding a display/storage track for small railroad vehicles (Model T inspection cars, specifically.) However, this would require a new switch in a tight, tricky area.

Would be worth the trouble to keep useful, popular Railcar 4 protected and out of the way from increasingly crowded track.

If you mean the "Roundhouse Lead"; that is the plan, if it possible to do.  The issue is that the switch needs to be placed where the Roundhouse Lead makes an S curve; and we need to keep vehicular access to the water tank/section house.

At any rate, this is just an idea that has been batted about; no decision has been made.

Could we remove a little more of the hill, without disturbing 'buttercups' final resting place?  That would give us room for a switch and move the road vehicle access to the water tank/section house a little further south.

In looking at the two pictures above and what is called on FB as the bump out or museum area as opposed to the rolling stock display area I happened to notice that the north end of the car barn extension museum area had been closed off.  I thought the plan was to extend this museum area further to the north until it was stopped to keep from impinging on the north yard turn table track.

Or, is this a temporary stopping point until projects and funding catch up?

Could I be wrong?  Not so early in the year....

It's a phase of construction with a separate fundraising effort. The first phase is the car storage extension and museum space bump out. Later on the bump out will be extended through an independent fundraising\grant effort.

What will happen on the bumpout's south end? A walk-in door?
And when will roof decking start?

There will be a large door in the south end to be used as primary visitor access. From earlier in this thread:

There will be a large barn door in the middle bay. The basic look of the building facade is to resemble a typical New England Barn. This will provide the main public access to the exhibits contained within the structure.

Yes, there will be smaller double doors at the south end of the bump out.  This will provide easy access to the display area, especially when the large rolling doors are kept closed do to rain, cold or windy conditions.  The rolling barn doors will be open in good weather and the area in front of the car barn will be landscaped with a walkway, grass and possibly a small garden.

North end of the bump-out; switch from roundhouse lead - check, add bump out north - check, just use a 7x9 garage door for the north end.  People won't see it, will be easy to get the Model T in and out, what could be better?

Brendan reports that he got some lumber yesterday, the windows and roof material are due Monday the 6th, and the siding lumber arrived today.  He's got plenty to keep himself busy now.
