The ramp track is designed to have a little bit of lateral leeway right at the end there. There's no ballast (as can be seen in the pictures) and there are skids under the ties that allow it to slide if the truck didn't back up perfectly in line with the track.

Ohhhh, didn't realize that.
Veeeerrry clever.  ;)
I'm sure it saves driver hair-tearing and wheel-twirling arm spasms.

Unless something has changed, the dairy car is expected to stay at the museum till next spring due to the long lasting construction in Wiscasset.

I wonder if the guys at Engineering News Record would do a history/feature story on WW&F building projects.

I found this instructional video for ramp use. Thought it might be helpful for exchanging locomotives.

Let's don't get into the habit of running between the moving locomotive and the goose-neck of the trailer.  Scary.....

I thought the whole thing was a bit scary! But no lack of nerves in Romania!

Backing the larger trailers like that is not too hard. I did it for 15 years. Brendan has installed a target to line up by, and the ties and rail can then be shifted the inch or so to make up any difference that the trailer may be off.

Agree, a larger trailer is usually easier than a smaller trailer. And reference marks help tremendously.

Well, strictly speaking, it's the distance from the coupling to the trailer axles that makes the difference. Those 4x8 utility trailers are hell to fanangle down my 8ft-wide driveway...

Agree. Those short, light trailers are REALLY difficult to back up, take careful, patient attention.
