We will share -
Thursday we may make it above 0º here in MN.
Then we are to get 6 - 12 inches snow - if yours is the same storm it may not get there till Sunday night.

A good pair of wool socks and Mr Bean's boots should keep your feet warm - leather alone will not do it. IKFE
Tingly pull ons help allot.

The pair of conventional boots and socks that will keep my feet warm hasn't been invented yet.   I've tried Sorels and Columbia Bugaboots, and all manner of "nice, warm socks."   None of them do the job.   100% wool socks seem to be very irritating to wear and are not noticeably warmer than the synthetic, "high-tech" socks they sell these days.    The activated charcoal toe heaters are next to worthless.   They require oxygen to work, and when you seal them up in tight socks and boots, you deprive them of that.   So, you get about 10 minutes of heat, then your feet freeze.   And, every time you peel those adhesive pads off your socks, you peel off some of the fabric as well.

A couple of days ago, I was having a conference call with my boss at work.   It turns out we're both going to be in Maine this weekend and we commiserated about how cold it was going to be.   She shared that when she was skiing, she used electrically-heated socks and that the effectiveness and endurance of those has gotten a lot better with the advent of Lithium-Ion batteries.   She highly recommended a particular product and said they worked all day for her.   So, last night, I hit a ski shop in Salem, NH and got myself a pair.   $269 for a pair of socks.   Batteries are already charged and I plan to use them tomorrow at the railroad.   We'll see how they work.      I have a bunch of photo trips planned in February (Niles Canyon, Carson City, V&T, Nevada Northern, C&TS Rotary), so if they work, they will be worth every penny.   It will be nice to be able to enjoy those events, vs. just trying to endure them.

My father always advised me to allow for two pairs of socks when sizing winter boots.

The charcoal gizmos are an interesting engineering problem. They have to last long but also be warm, which are directly competing constraints. I have a pair of wool socks with a "toe pocket" that will hold the hand-sized charcoal gizmos. Those work better, but they do need room to fit. Hence the over-sized boots.

WEATHER UPDATE:

Per Weather Svc. and Accuweather - weekend snowstorm forecast is slowing down.  Start of storm for Mid-Coast Maine not expected until after 7pm on Saturday.  Looks like most weekend activities will be in the clear of major weather.  Really wish I could be there...……..

I put cotton inside of wool socks - better absorption.

But sometimes moving is the only thing that works.

Cold hands are my bane. Choppers (mittens) help but are not the full answer.

Would it be possible for the February weekend to have official livestreams from the lineside, like at the crossing right near Sheepscot, or even inside of Alna Center? I think it'd be nice for people who couldn't make it to take part in the action as it happens

Don't forget that Alna Center has no electricity and no internet service. :)

True, but a cellphone and small wireless hotspot can go a long way ;)

Ha!

The WW&F is a proverbial desert when it comes to cell carrier service.  I can assure  you that my ATT cell phone gets "no service" :'( at all  even at Sheepscot, and it does not get better up the tracks.

I have heard a rumor :-\ that Verizon at least has voice service at Sheepscot, and possibly further north (up the tracks) as well, but I suspect cell data is poor or marginal, at best.

Trust us, the WW&F is a LONGER way. Cell coverage is marginal at best along most of the WW&F.

I have Tracfone, which I believe is through the Verizon network around here.  Depending on where I am in Sheepscot, I have poor to no service (in the shop and the north yard I have virtually none, better in the house, best up by the garage).  Service actually gets better for me the further north I go, at least until the Top of the Mountain.  Mountain service is spotty.

Magphone service is (hopefully) fine at all points on the line. ;D "Every successful call is a crank call."
