Good day today. I believe when I checked with Linda, she said their were approximately 168 paying passengers, not including the approximately 20 or so volunteers who rode the train north to participate in the brush clearing on the Mountain Extension. I say 'approximately' because we have had some trouble with our online ticket reservation software which made accounting for the exact number of passengers difficult. Needless to say it was a good day, passengers and volunteers alike seemed to have a good time- there were lots of kids and families and most had big smiles on their faces.

There’s a chance we’ll swap our days and do shop today, plow tomorrow, depending on snow conditions on site.

The original idea of plowing today was to do so while the snow was still light and fluffy, but the storm ended in freezing rain and sleet, which changed the consistency of the snow.

Just fair warning...

Anticipated work for the weekend of Jan 26:

* Amherst Railway Society's Railroad Hobby Show (aka, "the Springfield Show") is this weekend, and many of our volunteers will be in attendance.  Other than ourselves and merchandise, we're not taking anything special this year.
* Back at Sheepscot, Mike plans some repairs on the dozer.
* Flatcar 34 - I expect Zack and Fred will be at work on it.
* Shop insulation

NO tree cutting, as not enough people to do it.

Work done on Saturday Jan 26:

* Springfield Show: I'll let the onsite reporters discuss that.  Sales are up over last year (mostly from memberships).
* Dozer repair: Mike worked on it valiantly, but something isn't working right and he didn't have the manual with him.
* Flatcar 34: The timbers were removed from flatcar 118, which was rolled outdoors, and the timbers were put on the floor on cribbing.   Zack's now waiting for some steel that Jason has ordered.  A grinder was applied to some rough spots on one of the draft gear units.

After the big rain Thursday, Trout Brook trestle had all kinds of ice chunks around it.

And today we celebrated Fred's 83rd birthday (coming on Thursday).

I informed our bridge engineer, Wayne Duffet, of the situation yesterday.  He came out to inspect on site this morning, and reported there is no immediate concern.  He did offer ideas for improved bracing and the like, for this summer.

Good day in Springfield.

The ice jam did not appear to be caused by the bridge, as it was built up down stream as well. But I shared the photos because it was impressive.

It was about this time last year we had the same type of rain event that flushed the ice out, with the same result.

It certainly does appear that the batter piles did their job.

Maybe we should look at some large boulders and core stone on the upstream side to help mitigate ice damage.

The dozer trouble is related to a transmission filter change I did back in December. The new filter is so clean that the pump builds more pressure and pops out a seal. I looked for the relief valve but could not locate them.

Looking in the book (I had brought it home to order parts) it showed where the reliefs were. I had thoughts of replacing them until I looked up the parts and saw the price. So now I will first check them and only replace if needed. I think they are just stuck from not being used and need to be freed up. I did order a new seal.

The rebuilt angle cylinders were installed, but the pins need to be tack welded to finish the installation. Because of the seal issue I could not move the dozer to weld them. Maybe next time.

A few photos from the Amherst Railway Society show at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield, MA.  John McNamara organized our WW&F show crew that included Susan Hackett, Marcel Levesque, Duncan Mackiewicz, Dan Malkowski, Joan Mehan, Cindy Rhine and Nancy Weeks.  Nancy provided great lunches for the crew both Saturday and Sunday (Thanks!).

We were located at Narrow Gauge Corner in section 78 of the Young Building, next to the fine folks from Phillip's Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad.  A couple of photos before the crowds arrived:

The crowds have arrived!

What–me worry?
