I will admit to feeling somewhat ambivalent about dam removal. While it's an essential part of habitat restoration for Atlantic salmon, alewives, etc., something which I think is objectively good (and not just because of my professional background as an ecologist), it also means another piece of the history of water-powered rural industry in Maine (and elsewhere) is being lost forever. So, I'm conflicted.

Pretty sure the Head Tide dam is safe for now. The chatter from the residents made the town modify their plan, and are now repairing instead of removing, per the latest Town Report.. Not to hold water, but to keep the historic structure stable, and allow for fish passage.

The plan for the Head Tide dam will also provide better access and beautify the immediate area. The dam cannot be removed per the terms and conditions of the deed to the town.

Preserving the historic structure of the Head Tide dam while allowing for fish passage as well as public access and beautification sounds like an ideal compromise.
