Another milestone day, August 7. We finished the last coat of the paint on the entire coach. It now has 4 coats of primer followed by 3 coats of color.

And it has been sanded, by hand between most of those coats. I have worn through the fingers of a pair of good work gloves, as well as sanding off most of my fingerprints.

Next, we sand it again. But first we are having the paint expert form Epifanes do a 'nitpick' touch up over the whole coach. After that we will rub it down once more with scotchbrite. Then we will have the artist start the decorative paint work.

Here is a photo of the coach with the ful brilliance of the paint.

Will the coach be available for viewing this weekend?

Yees- Eric asked me to ensure the doors are unlocked, and large doors open if weather is suitable, so that people may see (with their eyes, not their fingers) the coach in its current splendor.

When viewing the car in person- notice the painted, lettered and varnished sample sitting on the end platform.  Eric points out the green color is kicked slightly greener (less dark) with its two layers of varnish.  We noticed the same effect when No 9’s black cab was varnished.  The light having to go through the layers of varnish, then reflecting off the green, then back through the varnish, kicks the color tone in a way that plain gloss paint cannot do.  Fascinating.

Thanks
Jason

Yes, the shop doors should be open. We will not be painting or sanding and before we do our next paint (varnish) we will be doing a major clean up. So a little traffic through there will be OK, as long as its not raining and lots of mud.

Today we pulled the coach outside for the first time since it was painted. We were able to see the deep green color in real sunlight. I think it looks great.

I really like the natural finish on the window frames.  I think as we do maintenance on our other cars that we strip and naturally finish those windows as well.  Would make for convenient wintertime projects if cars are kept inside the carbarn for the winter.

Eric is working on new or repaired, windows for coach 8 in his home shop. He took home a stack of new glass this week. Where the old windows would be to hard to strip and varnish he has found a paint that looks close enough in color.

As other coaches are restored I think this new color and the varnished window look will become our standard finish.

I sanded the old windows on coach 8.  It does not seem practical to sand them to bare wood...I tried.  I have primed them in prep for repainting a bright brown to match the stained and varnished windows on coach 9.  Tempered Glass to be installed starting today.

Not sure how one would uncouple those.

The uncoupling mechanism is not yet incorporated into the model. Basically there is a cut lever that pulls the hook to the side.

I understand that uncoupling requires "slack" to be present (tension removed from the coupler by pushing the cars together) to allow the crewman to operate the cut lever or chain.

This page has more on the Miller system: https://www.midcontinent.org/rollingstock/dictionary/millerhook.htm
