April 2017 Work Planning
« on: March 29, 2017, 06:00:48 AM »
Anticipated work for April 1, 2017:

* Construction of #11, the new Beyer-Garratt 044-440 begins this week.
* Since one shipping container clearly won't be enough, we'll be putting a mine in underneath the hill to the west to put away everything.
* Boxcar 67 work - we may be able to start the siding.
* We'll try out Fred's new 15-foot, triple-bladed chain saw.
* Equipment car 1015 work
* Easter prep (only 3 weeks away)
* Archives - Linda will be sorting through some original 1910 color photos of all 5 Maine 2-footers.

Clearly, or perhaps, not so clearly, James's imbibing in excessive orange juice for the upcoming Saturday festivities has caused him to confuse the TOM siding with Box Car 67 siding.... or perhaps not....

BTW - An early color film process was used by a photographer named Prokudin-Gorsky in Russia in the early 1900's so the technology did exist. Too bad he didn't come to Maine.

* Back to WW&F stuff - The bay 2 shelving was removed yesterday so more clean up can continue this weekend.

* As things look now (Weds. afternoon) we may be cleaning up after an April 1st snow storm.

Work done on Saturday April 1:

Unfortunately a very localized storm super cell dropped five feet of snow in the area around (not in) the Midcoast of Maine, so only Fred, Zack, Steve Z, myself, and the Rhines made it in, so volunteers were limited today.  It was like a snow donut.

* Container shelving: we doubled the number of shelves in the container.
* Boxcar 67: Zack finished the last belt rail, and started working on the tension rods on the side.  Fred and I brought over the remaining siding that was stored in 309.  Next week Steve Z will be running the siding boards through a router to put a groove in the side to match the old siding.

Fred tried to show off the triple bladed chain saw but it got stuck in a stump.

Anticipated work for Saturday April 8:

* Just one weekend left to Easter Eggspress, so we may try to run the length of the line.  There still may be ice in the crossings.  And there's a bunch of tree trunks and branches in the parking lot that need to be cut up.
* Boxcar 67: we may be able to start putting on siding.  And there is still truck assembly.
* Further shelf building in the storage shed and moving stuff to storage.

Also Saturday evening there's a ham & bean dinner at the Alna fire station.

Work done on Saturday April 8:

* Boxcar 67: Zack finished up on the belt rails and boxcar entrance, and others painted it with linseed oil.  Truck work progressed, one of the trucks is now assembled.
* Bay 2 cleanout: A bunch of stuff was put at the south end of Bay 3 earlier, it was taken to the garage/junk pile/storage trailer.  The milling machine that had lived between Bay 2 and 3 and went to Roger still had the motor mounted above, so that was removed.
* Workflat 1015: Mike brought in the understructure he built and put it on the car and welded it to it.  Meanwhile Jason and Bob worked on fixing the medium-large milling machine and started on the wheels.
* Line inspection: We ran a trip up the line to inspect and clear out crossings and ice.  Not too much ice, except for Sutter's Crossing.  No trees down.
* Switching: Locos 9 and 3 were switched around.

* Jay and Brendan reassembled one of boxcar #67's trucks, as James noted.
* The metal parts for the other truck were prepped for paint.
* Linda worked in the archives.
* During the main line inspection, the phone was tested successfully between Alna Center and Sheepscot.  The first telephone post north of Sutter's was found leaning precariously, pulling the phone line with it.  It was righted but should get some attention during the work weekend so it doesn't fall over again.
* Cindy made a nice lunch of sloppy joes.
* When I left Jason and others were working on one of the axles for workflat #1015.

It seems the main line held up better this winter than Cross Road, which has heaved badly in sections, especially by Route 218.
What–me worry?

The successful test is good news. I hope that the test occurred after the pole-righting, just in case pole-righting changed something. I'm very anxious that the phone works well during Eggspress. Unfortunately, a family obligation prevents my attendance.
