Coach 8 - Official Work Thread

I’d like to call attention to how gargantuan this undertaking on coach 8 truly has been and continues to be.  We had wondered when there’s be a window to cycle the car through the shop for this work- under conventional thinking it was years away from shop space  opportunity.  Eric recognized the car couldn’t wait that long and hatched this plan to tackle it.  Eric has personally put in an incredible marathon work effort spanning 8 calendar days now.  Today he, Ron, Stewart and perhaps others primed the car.  Congratulations to Eric and team, and thank you for making this happen!

I knew No. 8 needed some renewal of its exterior, but I was very, very surprised by the extensive work completed over Fall Work Weekend.  Not nearly as surprised at what Eric and the small corps of volunteers he has led has accomplished so far.

Coach 8 received a coat of gray primer today and the windows were re-installed. It will be in service on Saturday's pumpkin trains!

Thanks to Eric and everyone who helped him with this project over the last seven (or more?) days.

Next up... installing the other baggage door during the Spring Work Weekend, and a new paint job (to match coach 9.)

 I for one can't wait to see the new coach color for both 8 and 9.  I know it has been meticulously researched using tech methods previously unavailable.  Apparently it dates back to the 1890's before green became a common coach color.

Spring work weekend is approaching.   I plan to work on the coach again. 

We have a second "baggage" door which will help with handicap access.  My plan is to install it this weekend. 

I have two 4inch quarter round posts for the door frame.   I have ordered barn door style rolling hardware for the door, we may have to fiddle to install them, I hope they are suitable.  We will have to cut the side of the coach for the opening and frame the door opening.  Interior seats and trim will have to be modified.

We will repaint the car to match coach 9 with the dark olive green with gold lettering.  This will probably happen after the work weekend and be done by the weekday coach crew, but extra volunteers are most welcome.

I hope some of you can help with this project.  It should be good honest carpentry and will greatly help the railway.

Sorry for the last minute question, but will the door have windows? The reason I ask is that without windows in the new doors, the handicap end of the car will be rather dark.

Didn’t Bill Baskerville make these baggage doors a few years ago? One of the doors was installed a while back, and this work is to install the second one, on the other side of the “baggage” section.

A handsome piece of carpentry.  I've been admiring the door to be installed in the Percival House basement as I worked on the Newsletter reserve this past late winter.

There certainly are windows in the doors.   One has been installed for several years this is the second to allow access to both sides if necessary.
