Might have a few days in August
« on: July 19, 2015, 10:36:22 PM »
Right now, I am waiting on the decision on whether or not I'll be going to get a job down in Texas.  If I do not get the job, I plan to purchase an Amtrak railpass and go explore the country.  If I do this, I'd like to put in a few days working on the WW&F.  The problem is how would I get there from Portland, and where could I stay that is extremely cheap (trying to do this on a budget)?

I do have museum experience, working for many years at the NC Maritime Museum's boat shop in Beaufort, NC.  However, this would be my first time working on the WW&F.

John.

Hi John,
If I'm not mistaken, the Amtrak DOWNEASTER now runs all the way to Brunswick where they connect with the Maine Eastern RR which goes all the way to Rockland via Wiscasset.
I don't know if there's any kind of connecting local buss or anything, but I'm sure you can arrange something via this forum with someone who is planning to be at the museum when you visit.
As far as accommodations go, I'll leave that to someone wiser.   ;)

There's no more connection between the Downeaster and the Maine Eastern RR.  Maine Eastern changed their schedule on that this year.

There's Concord Trailways buses that leave from the Portland Transportation Center (where the Downeaster stops also) up the coast to Wiscasset or Damariscotta, but I believe the northbound bus runs after the southbound bus does, so you can't rely on that for transportation to the Museum and back to your accommodations.

Hey, thanks, y'all!

It turns out I did not get the job, so I'm free to roam the country!  I'll know the precise date here in a few days; assuming I take the bus up to Wiscasset, could someone possibly pick me up from the bus stop?

Hi John,

There is a Massachusets railfan group that is renting the WW&F for the afternoon some time in September.  I'm sure others here know the details better than I do.  At any rate, they will be traveling all the way between Boston and Alna.  Maybe you could join them.

Just a thought ...

Best Regards,
Glenn

It occurs to me that Wiscasset probably does not have Uber.  Accordingly, what is there available for transportation to and from the bus stop?  I'll be arriving tomorrow at about 10 AM.

According to their web site, there appears to be Uber service in "greater Maine" - and I was able to quote a fare from Wiscasset to Alna.

If all else fails, call the museum when you arrive: 207-882-4193. Hopefully someone will be around and can come pick you up.

What's your schedule when you arrive? Looks like we may have a roof party on Fri-Sat.

Oops - "Greater Maine" really means "Bar Harbor/Ellsworth-Bangor". So no Uber service... sorry!

There might be a business opportunity there.
I am a licensed and active Uber driver in  the Denver metro area.

I could see it in Maine on a limited basis.
